Among the many Big Lies the Bush Regime will use to try to win re-"election"
in the fall is the lie that the Bush White House is uniquely qualified to protect America from terrorists.
I just came across this comment on an online forum, which is typical of what the Brainwashed
Right wants to believe:
While Clinton was president, a man named John O'Neal [sic], in the upper eschelons
of the FBI, was doing everything in his power to get the bureau to shift its focus from domestic crime to Islamic terrorism
as the major threat to the US.
In fact, during the last couple of years of the Clinton Administration
there WAS a shift of focus from domestic crime to Islamic terrorism as the major threat to the U.S. It was the BUSH REGIME
that took the focus AWAY from a threat of Islamic terrorism.
In July 1998 Clinton directed the Department of Defense to charter the
U.S. Commission on National Security, which would also be called the Hart-Rudman Commission. This commission reported in February
2001 that there was a clear threat of terrorism on American soil. In the spring of 2001 there was widespread bipartisan support
in Congress for enactment of many of this commission's recommendations. THE BUSH REGIME SHUT DOWN ALL CONGRESSIONAL ACTION.
When the Bushistas took over power in January 2001, the departing Clinton
Administration tried to make them aware of the threat of terrorism, and the Bushies ignored them.
"One ... meeting took place
in the White House situation room during the first week of January 2001. The session was part of a program designed by Bill
Clinton's National Security Adviser, Sandy Berger, who wanted the transition between the Clinton and George W. Bush administrations
to run as smoothly as possible. With some bitterness, Berger remembered how little he and his colleagues had been helped by
the first Bush Administration in 1992-93. Eager to avoid a repeat of that experience, he had set up a series of 10 briefings
by his team for his successor, Condoleezza Rice, and her deputy, Stephen Hadley.
"Berger attended only one
of the briefingsthe session that dealt with the threat posed to the U.S. by international terrorism, and especially by al-Qaeda.
"I'm coming to this briefing," he says he told Rice, "to underscore how important I think this subject is." Later, alone in
his office with Rice, Berger says he told her, "I believe that the Bush Administration will spend more time on terrorism generally,
and on al-Qaeda specifically, than any other subject." -- Michael Elliott, "Could 9/11 Have Been Prevented," Time, August
12, 2002
In July 2001 [WHILE BUSH JUNIOR WAS PRESIDENT!] John O'Neill was barred
by bureaucrats in the U.S. Justice Department from returning to Yemen to continue his investigation of the Cole disaster.
According to some accounts, he complained that his investigation into Al-Qeada was shut down due to pressure from the Saudi
government and oil interests. O'Neill decides to retire from the FBI. He accepted a position as chief of security at the World
Trade Center in New York. He died in the World Trade Center on September 11.
"[W]hile there's always been constraints on investigating Saudis, under
George Bush it's gotten much worse. After the elections, the agencies were told to 'back off' investigating the Bin Ladens
and Saudi royals, and that angered agents." -- Greg Palast, BBC Newsnight, November 7, 2001
Meanwhile, intelligence had been streaming in concerning a likely Al Qaeda
attack. "It all came together in the third week in June [2001]," [Richard] Clarke said. "The C.I.A.'s view was that a major
terrorist attack was coming in the next several weeks." On July 5th, Clarke summoned all the domestic security agencies--the
Federal Aviation Administration, the Coast Guard, Customs, the Immigration and Naturalization Service, and the F.B.I.--and
told them to increase their security in light of an impending attack. [Lawrence Wright, The New Yorker, January 14, 2002]
Last night I read a Time magazine article about campaign fundraising and 527s. 527s, named after an IRS code that gives them tax-exempt status, are organizations that
"can raise unlimited money for advertising and voter-registration efforts, as long as they don't coordinate with the candidate."
Today, I read in the New York Times that the "Federal Election Commission said on Wednesday that advocacy groups that were established to get around fund-raising
restrictions in the new campaign finance law could continue to spend unlimited contributions for television commercials and
other communications, though they must do so under far more restrictive rules. ...
"In its ruling, the election commission placed some restrictions on the way these committees operate, including a prohibition
on certain advertisements paid for solely with soft money." Nothing that can't be worked around.
Why is this significant? As you know, the Bush re-"election" campaign has raised
great mountains of money compared to what any Democratic candidate has raised. Bush has piled up $132 million in this campaign
cycle, whereas John Kerry only managed $25 million. "In a world where soft money is technically banned," says Time, "the
Republicans have the advantage: they have always had more donors who can contribute the maximum in hard money--$2,000 per
person — that the law allows."
But Democrats are better positioned to take advantage of yesterday's 527 ruling than
Republicans. George Soros can contribute only $2000 directly to a Democratic candidate, but he can apply his pledge of $10
million to anti-Bush advertising and other activities. And Moveon.org, with its "Bush in 30 Seconds" ads, should also benefit.
Republicans can form 527s also, of course, but so far they haven't put as much
energy into it as Democrats. Contributing big bucks to a 527 doesn't get you access to the candidate, which to Republicans
is what fund-raising is all about. Bush in particular is very, very good at rounding up lots of $2,000 donations through the
Rangers. (See in particular "Bush's Bounty Hunters" in the Texas Observer.) Democrats cannot compete with that. But yesterday's ruling on the 527
could prove to be significant in a very few months.
Do I think, in the grand scheme of things, that having to spend enormous piles of
money to win an election is a good thing? No, I do not. But it's war. And if you can, donate to Moveon.org. Thank you.
SAN FRANCISCO — President Bush today reaffirmed that he "strongly believes" in
defining marriage as "between a man and a woman" and said he was concerned about the courts' failure to block marriage licenses
from being handed out to same-sex couples.
"I am troubled by activist judges, who are defining marriage," Bush said,
speaking to reporters at the White House.
He added: "I have consistently stated that I'll support law to protect marriage between
a man and a woman, and obviously these events are influencing my decision.
"I'm watching very carefully, but I'm troubled
by what I've seen. People need to be involved with this decision. Marriage ought to be defined by the people, not
by the courts, and I'm watching carefully."
Although the number of same-sex couples seeking licenses slowed today,
the total has climbed to more than 2,600 since couples started lining up Thursday. ...
If you're a regular Mahablog
reader, you are smart enough to see what I see. 'Nuff said.
Looks like John Kerry won another one, but John Edwards also did well
considering Wisconsin is a way northern state. It would not be a bad thing for these two to keep the match race going for
a while, as the campaigning gets them on television.
Here's a trip for you -- Pat Buchanan with a clue. He looks at the role of PNAC in getting us into Iraq. He absolves Bush of responsibility, of course.
Dear Readers: I apologize for not writing more. I'm working on a book,
so blogging may be sporadic for the next couple of weeks or so, unless something significant happens. Or not.
"To announce that there must be no criticism of the
president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is
morally treasonable to the American public." --Theodore Roosevelt, 1918
The War Prayer
I come from the Throne -- bearing
a message from Almighty God!... He has heard the prayer of His servant, your shepherd, & will grant it if such shall be
your desire after I His messenger shall have explained to you its import -- that is to say its full import. For it is like
unto many of the prayers of men in that it asks for more than he who utters it is aware of -- except he pause & think.
"God's servant & yours has prayed his prayer. Has
he paused & taken thought? Is it one prayer? No, it is two -- one uttered, the other not. Both have reached the ear of
Him who heareth all supplications, the spoken & the unspoken....
"You have heard your servant's prayer -- the uttered
part of it. I am commissioned of God to put into words the other part of it -- that part which the pastor -- and also you
in your hearts -- fervently prayed, silently. And ignorantly & unthinkingly? God grant that it was so! You heard these
words: 'Grant us the victory, O Lord our God!' That is sufficient. The whole of the uttered prayer is completed into
those pregnant words.
"Upon the listening spirit of God the Father fell also
the unspoken part of the prayer. He commandeth me to put it into words. Listen!
"O Lord our Father, our young patriots, idols of our
hearts, go forth to battle -- be Thou near them! With them -- in spirit -- we also go forth from the sweet peace of our beloved
firesides to smite the foe.
"O Lord our God, help us to tear their soldiers to bloody
shreds with our shells; help us to cover their smiling fields with the pale forms of their patriot dead; help us to drown
the thunder of the guns with the wounded, writhing in pain; help us to lay waste their humble homes with a hurricane of fire;
help us to wring the hearts of their unoffending widows with unavailing grief; help us to turn them out roofless with their
little children to wander unfriended through wastes of their desolated land in rags & hunger & thirst, sport of the
sun-flames of summer & the icy winds of winter, broken in spirit, worn with travail, imploring Thee for the refuge of
the grave & denied it -- for our sakes, who adore Thee, Lord, blast their hopes, blight their lives, protract their bitter
pilgrimage, make heavy their steps, water their way with their tears, stain the white snow with the blood of their wounded
feet! We ask of one who is the Spirit of love & who is the ever-faithful refuge & friend of all that are sore beset,
& seek His aid with humble & contrite hearts. Grant our prayer, O Lord & Thine shall be the praise & honor
& glory now & ever, Amen."
(After a pause.) "Ye have prayed it; if ye still desire
it, speak! -- the messenger of the Most High waits."
