General Clark has been talking about options in Iraq for MONTHS...see this WaPo piece from August 26, 2005.

http://securingamerica.com/articles/wapo/2005-08-26

By Gen. (ret.) Wesley Clark
Washington Post
Unabridged Version
August 26, 2005

In the old, familiar fashion, mounting US casualties in Iraq have mobilized increasing public doubts about the war. Now, more than half the American people believe that the invasion of Iraq was a mistake. They're right. But it would also be a mistake now to pull out, start pulling out, or set a date to pull out. Instead we need a strategy to create a stable democratizing and peaceful state in Iraq – a strategy the Administration has failed to develop and articulate.

From the outset of the American post-invasion efforts, we needed a three-pronged strategy – diplomatic, political, and military. Iraq sits geographically on the fault-line between Shia and Sunni Islam – and for the mission to succeed we will have to be the catalyst for regional cooperation. Iraq cannot be "isolated from its neighbors and tensions in the region. We needed to engage Iraq's neighbors to insure that a stable, democratizing Iraq was not a threat to them, to isolate Iraq from outside supplies, leadership, and manpower, and to gain from them resources and support to alleviate the burdens on the US.

If what I'm seeing in our government and it's actions is America; than count me as an American hater. I hate deceit in government,I hate arrogance in leadership and I hate sheltered incompetence in government. Bush is a shit stain on our national fabric who has taken America whoring....I probably am wee bit delusional, but my America doesn't kidnap whoever they want, doesn't torture whoever they want, doesn't spread deceit, lies, and disinformation to hide responsibility and avoid the scrutiny of a universal morality. My America respects the rule of law and a honors a basic human dignity. Bush and his buddies have trampled on every decency of which America should be composed. I hate Bush also..Not for the man, but for the character. He has no substance in character, which has been made obvious by his actions

My plan of salvation in Iraq: Get out now and admit to the world -like they don't already know?- that America's leadership made a mistake in invading Iraq and that the invasion was the child of deceit, fathered by Bush. The world will recognize honesty and sincerity and a contrite spirit and help America throught the disgrace that Bush has brought upon our nation...There will never be a homeland for terrorist in Iraq if America can reclaim the moral high ground by doing the right thing. Lead by example.

[...] Most of the chest-thumping bravado one finds on the Right makes me realize the chest-thumpers are looking at Islamic terrorism and seeing something entirely different from what I see. They’re seeing something like a conventional war; I do not. So many citizens (erroneously) embraced the invasion of Iraq out of emotional need to find a solid, tangible enemy to fight in a glorious little war. As I said, it makes processing the pain of 9/11 so much easier. But that’s an emotional crutch, not reality. And, as I argued this morning, all our thrashing around in Iraq is leaving us weaker and more vulnerable to real threats. [...]
