[...] I think Sontag nailed it when she said religion “American style” is more the idea of religion than religion itself. Of course, you can say the same thing about many other matters supposedly dear to Americans. How many right-wing web sites have you come across that defend, say, the NSA warrantless wiretap program in the name of “freedom“? [...]

[...] You know how it is with righties — they like to talk about freedom, but really, to them, freedom’s just another word. And it’s a word that applies only to them and their agenda. They don’t mean for the rest of us to have it. [...]

[...] In fact, the Feminist Majority Foundation and other feminist organizations were speaking out in opposition to the oppression of women in Afghanistan long before righties noticed that the Taliban was our enemy. And it is interesting that the rightie mentions Iran, a “bad” country, and not rape in Iraq (which I blogged about recently), or our “ally,” Pakistan. Liberals rant about 2000 soldiers dying in Iraq while dismissing 2,996 murdered on the morning of September 11 by saying it was just “sand thrown in America’s eyes”.
When I started reading this, I felt like "what is the point?" I have been ranting against the stupidity of what we are doing forever it seems like. The stupidity continues and we are so far in that no clear path out exists. In fact I have been saying from the begining of this adminstration that their plan is to do as much damage to freedom as fast as possible and they continue to succeed, beyond their wildest dreams. However, I do find solice in reading other comments that overlap with my concerns. thanks

Someone should send Danielle a copy of "Full Metal Jacket." To paraphrase Animal: Freedom's just a word. If I'm going to put my balls on the line for a word, the word is poontang.

I think every thinking person ought to demand that any politician who uses (and overuses) the word "freedom" be made to supply a definition of that word on the spot.
