I have had no tv since 1979, but was glad to catch a bit of today's hearing at someone else's house, as I did want to see Alito's facial expressions [or lack of] as he listened to committee members then answered their concerns. I caught some of Alito being questioned by Schumer, then left that house/with/tv after watching John Cornyn for awhile.
I thought [from watching Alito's sublte facial expressions ] that Alito was actually more comfortable engaging with Schumer's tough statements and questioning that Alito was with Cornyn. Cornyn seemed to be, in effect, insulting Alito's intelligence by his, Cornyn's, sweeping generalizations [explaining Alito's position to Alito!] and summations, each of which Cornyn then 'allowed' Alito a second to 'agree to'. Yikes, I never realized how much these hearings are designed for public consumption rather than fact-finding.

I think it's imperative that we boldly reinforce, in the public's mind, the Bork-Alito connection. The GOP should not be allowed to exploit the skin-deep contrast between Bork's Reagan-era right-wing bravado and Alito's coolly evasive and placatory rhetoric. Alito Bork. Bork Alito. Let's call the whole thing off.

There is one orgaization in particular dedicated to getting this message across (http://www.goodstorm.com/stores/leftink). I found at least two shirt designs devoted to raising awareness of Alito's pernicious agenda. I recommend checking them out. I'm really thinking about getting the "Acusar Bush" shirt for my mom.

Good one, Swami. I didn't get that comment either, though I was pretty darned sure he wasn't referring to Padilla or any of the other thousands of victims of our human rights abuses. But of course, all hail the fetus, for it has the most rights of anyone.

Why is his wife smirking so much?

Saw her smirking when Sammy testified that he'd have to read all the briefs before he could opine on Bush v. Gore and the Supreme Court's involvement in the 2000 election.

Yeah, I'll bet they never talked about that subject, and he never had an opinion.

I was confused with Alito's statement that "nobody is above the law, and nobody is beneath the law". Was he making a veiled reference to Jose Padilla or others who is somewhere out in limbo according to Bush's law? I've never heard the term—beneath the law... except maybe to mean under the law.

I once heard someone say "Those who stand for nothing will fall for anything".I hope the Democrats will stand for something this time , rather than fall for anything.

On a hearing related note: Did anyone notice Mrs.Alito during sen.Kennedy's questioning? She would be a crappy poker player.Anyone who watches a replay later, note her breathing and her nervous swallowing as kennedy asks Alito about the vanguard situation.THIS IS THEIR WEAK SPOT, AND WHAT SHE FEARS THE MOST...her reactions are very telling.Sammy boy has a much better poker face, but having the wife behind him gives his hand away really...I hope SOMEONE besides me(hello senate aides??) notices.

There are not enough Repubs who could have their arms twisted to change the senate rules even before all this corruption was exposed. In my opinion that is.

Ps. The current corruption being exposed is not a culture(good sound byte though) or scandal. It is a crime.
