[...] I wrote a post last year about what bullshit that turned out to be. But one of the funny things about the loyal Bushies is that most of ‘em made their bones in government service, academia, rightie think tanks or the Republican Party itself. The few who were genuine businessmen — like the original Secretary of the Treasury, Paul Snow — were the first to go. Even Dick the Dick, though he was a CEO of Halliburton, was reportedly not allowed to make operational decisions in that capacity. He was an asset to Halliburton mostly because of his extensive contacts in government and the military-industrial complex. [...]

[...] I’ve written about this before (most recently here and here). Every now and then (and with increasing frequency, it seems) there is a flurry of news stories speculating that Bush is about to shake up his staff and bring in some new people. Here is one such story from last week, from the Associated Press. [...]

All for show is right. I can hardly abide listening to clips of Bush saying anything.....and I think it is because he has secretly been forced by his puppeteers to attend acting lessons daily to try to fool folks into thinking he is 'assured and forceful', to try to add some phony life into memorized talking points........geez, he comes across as a robot. It would be an interesting visual to put together a series of mute clips of Bush speaking and even moving....same robotic walk from an airplane with exact same robotic hand wave to some fantasy observers who are always off to his right....same thrusting of hands at the podium....same jutting forward of the head for speech emphasis.....just string these robot moments together with sublining dates but without audio....

All for show -- what struck me about the Bushies from the beginning is that they were so full of themselves. I think they sincerely believed themselves to be so superior to the Clintons that everything about themselves they saw as different from the Clintons got dress up as a virtue, whether it was or not. <i>See, we don't work as hard as they do, so we're better.</i>

the gang that tried to do government by the cheap (in both time and money) . . .

But, they haven't even done that--do government by the cheap. Triple deficents, crony contractors draining the national treasury without any outrage from the taxpayers, a potentially 200 trillion war, etc. There are so few average Americans benefiting from any thing this administration has done; but, they seem to be blind.

Yes, excellent catch.

But I wonder whether the 2001 story was all just for show. I have a fuzzy memory of similar things being said by the Gingrichistas in 1995 -- that they planned to run a more family-friendly Congress than the Dems, with more time for staffers to be with their families. I seem to recall that the press covered the agonizing conflict of the brave new Republicans as they tried to get all their contract provisions passed in 100 days while giving staff members time off. That was probably all bullshit too, but I think it played well at the time. I wonder if the Bushies just put the same story out in '01.

Bush didn't take the job to actually <i>work</i>; he did it so he could play dress-up and land jets on aircraft carriers, and also to catch up on his reading. I hear he's almost finished <i>My Pet Goat</i>.

Excellent catch. What an irony, the gang that tried to do government by the cheap (in both time and money) has dropped the ball when faced with emergencies and crises. Bet N.O. and the Ninth Ward would really be thrilled to go back and read the admin's lackadaisical approach to governing and protecting the nation.

People who rely on structure can be overcompensating for their marked inability to actually think.

I'm not denigrating anyone who likes efficiency or tidiness. But Bush has shown an extraordinary inability to freakin' function at all. He can't get through a scripted press conference without losing his place.

So much of daily life is just reaction...get up, get dressed, get out. Say the same things, do the same things. It makes some people seem competent...until something happens. You know in the disaster movies, when the unexpected happens and they always have somebody just completely lose it?

I'd cast President Bush for that role.

I've always said he's basically a two year old in an adult's body.
