[...] The article in question is one I discussed here last April, about draconian abortion law in El Salvador. The error that was corrected concerned a woman named Carmen Climaco. The article says she terminated a pregnancy at 18 weeks’ gestation; El Salvadoran courts contend she delivered a full-term baby and strangled it. The Times acknowledges the court records invalidate Climaco’s claims, but it stands by the rest of the article. [...]

[...] But right now, in the U.S., most of the Right is strongly ideological, but most of the Left isn’t. Most of us who call ourselves “liberals” or “progressives” or “Democrats” these days do not have simple doctrines and beliefs and dogmas that tell us whether taxes should go up or down, for example. Instead, we’ve got policy wonks studying trends and crunching numbers. Most of us in favor of reproduction rights are concerned about the impact of abortion and birth control bans on the lives and health of women, and our concerns are based on real-world experience. We think government ought to be responsive to the needs and desires of citizens, but we don’t assume what those needs and desires are always going to be. [...]

Maha,

Is there anywhere we can write to protest this hellish situation? Is Amnesty International involved? Is anyone doing anything?

Rev. Thomas J. Euteneuer, Head of Human Life Int'l is an asshole and should have "Reverend" removed from his title. He is probably self-appointed. The comment that he made about El Salvador being "an inspiration - an important victory for the pro-life movement" is insane. He doesn't give a rat's ass about "life for the living" as in the woman.

Why do men keep sticking their noses into our vaginas.

The Reverend should be castrated!

I found this to be an appalling article. It's hard to believe that this is 2006!

El Salvador's terroristic government of the 1980s, aided and abetted by the Reagan administration, appears to have been a kind of prep school for this insane brand of fascism.

Anyone who calls that kind of hell "an inspiration" isn't a reverend, he's just another sick creep with no shame.

Abortion seems to be a messy business.

And as a man, I feel I have no say, keep it that way.
