[...] I’ve already commented on the Haditha killings here and here. Now I’m just looking at how the story emerged and how the U.S. military responded. As you can see from what I pieced together from news stories, it isn’t clear exactly when U.S. military officials in Iraq became aware of the allegations. Maybe it was January, maybe February, but maybe earlier. Nor is it clear when the military began to investigate the allegations; maybe it was two months after the incident, maybe three. The NCIS may have become involved in February, or maybe March. [...]

"They went to investigate, and 23 people were killed."

Jeez - just think how many people they'd have killed if they were really pissed off. And of course the rightards will still chant robotically, "They hate us for our freedom."

I posted about this when word first came out. My wish was it wasn't true.

War is hell is not debatable.

Sad the blinders that people have on when looking at the world.
I have one comment re your concern that outside observers should make a distinction between Americans, those that support Bush or not. Well does the average American make this distinction of other people. I think not.
But the greater reason that the world sees in this a reflection of the American people and not just its crazy government, is that the American people voted by a majority to return the leaders to power. Leaders who waged an illegal war based on lies, ignored the GC and tortured prisoners, grabbed resources belomging to another country.
So tell me, if say Russia had done something similar like say invaded Finland based on lies, and leaders were revoted in, what would be your reaction? Fine distinctions between Russinas would disappear quickly!

Miller's dialogue was between him and a co-worker. Like him, I was astounded at the obvious ignorance of anyone who thinks we invaded Iraq "because they attacked us on 9/11." This is a person who is obviously not paying attention.

On the other hand, I was involved in a similar discussion with a couple of my own co-workers recently during which it was revealed that one of them DID NOT KNOW that there was a conflict going on in Iraq. Someone mentioned 9/11. "Oh, yeah," she said, "I heard about that."

This is a person who was raised in an extremely religious household where, apparently, their contact with the outside world was either severely limited or nonexistent. She said she does not read newspapers or watch TV. She must not use the Internet, either, yet is proficient with computer spreadsheet programs.

I wonder which is better: to be blissfully ignorant or wilfully ignorant.

What always amazes me is our belief that the Iraqis should be willing to have their country completely destroyed for some future promise of freedon when at home we're supposed to be willing to give up our freedoms to stay safe. Does anyone else see the inconsistency there?
