[...] I have compared Clinton’s and Bush’s pre-9/11 terrorism policies many times before, most recently here. I have never claimed that Clinton did everything he might have done to stop bin Laden, but he did a damn lot more than Bush did. And based on their record, the Bushies are the last people on the planet who ought to be taken seriously on terrorism. Yet they thump their chests and declare that they, and only they, have the cojones to keep the nation safe from terrorism. And they are taken seriously. [...]

[...] Exactly the same stuff I was saying here. No one has yet held the Bush Administration accountable for their terrible lapses in judgment about al Qaeda and terrorism in the eight months before 9/11. The nation literally was less protected from al Qaeda by September 2001 than it had been in September 2000, when Bill Clinton was still president. Then the scum had the nerve to claim they are somehow uniquely suited to guard the nation’s security. And they got away with it. [...]

There's a post up on Media Matters about a teacher's guide ABC published with Scholastic that's full of errors and misleading information that was sent to teachers around the country so that the teachers could urge their students to watch the "docudrama" and ask leading questions about things like whether the media hinders the war on terror. So... ditto on the co-opting of the media and the spread of propaganda. It would be laughable if it weren't so scary.

Another aspect of Americas move toward fascism I have seen developing is the co-opting of the language by fans of authoritarianism as well as the Bush administraion, in their increasing use of the word fascism.

Most notable to me has been Bill O'reilly. More and more he has been calling people and groups that he does not like fascist. He often tells his viewers that the ACLU is a fascist organization. Say what you will about the ACLU but what they do is actually the antithesis of fascism. Fighting govt. power abuses, defending civil liberties and standing up for the individual would be abhorrent in a fascist state.

I see this as a calculated effort to both muddy the waters on what fascism means as well as to pre-empt criticism of what they know is happening and want to continue. When more and more people start to call the new right for what it is, fascist, they hope that they will have by then used the word enough so that it will have lost both it's meaning and impact.

It would appear that history repeats itself too often to suit me. America's move toward fascism is a scene that has been played out several times in the last 100 years both in real life and in fiction. Ayn Rand, born in Russia in 1905. She came to America in the mid-20s and embarked on a long and fruitful career as a novelist, columnist, essayist, and actress. One of her most noted works was ATLAS SHRUGGED (1957). This book mirrors the rise of the communists in her native Russia and demonstrates to the world what can happen when one's country is taken over by a regime that begins to restrict the citizen's access to truth and creative freedoms. It also provides us with hope by showing how we can take back what is rightfully ours by standing up to these so-called powers that be.

We need courageous leaders who are willing to risk it all for the survival of our country. Unfortunately, we don't have anyone standing in the wings, not Democrat, Independent, or Republican (there are some good conservative Republicans out there). George Bush was right about one thing: fascism is evil. It is too bad that he was looking in a mirror when he said it.

I believe Robert Parry nails it by explaining the other part of their plan here.

In a nutshell, Bush won't invade Iran before the election for fear of a rout in Congress, but he can keep throwing bait to his base, hence the resurrection of Osama bin Laden and the comparisons to Hitler. It assures the base that he is committed to attacking Iran.

I tend to agree with Parry that the November election is really a referendum on Iran/World War 3. I don't know what Bush will do if we manage to fracture the R's dominance in Congress, whether he considers this a show-stopper (doubtful), at least he is playing it cautiously up till November. How I wish the Dems would get a clue and get to the point of the matter.

I am disgusted with Disney/ABC and their blatant gift to the Republicans, just two months before the election. Digby explains it well here. Take action here or here. Indeed it is "Losing China Again".

Pablo, it did my heart good to hear you say that the paramount issue of our time is America's move toward fascism. Most of my acquaintances look at me like I'm from another planet when I start talking along those lines. I think I need a better set of friends...

I read Glenn's post this morning as I try to do every day. He is one of the best as he gets right to the heart of the issue and takes on the paramount issue of our time which I beleive is Americas move toward fascism. While he usually does not refer to it in those terms, choosing to avoid potentialy distracting wording, I beleive it is now important to call it what it is.

The larger point of Glenn's post on ABC and their "dramatization" as they call it of 9/11 I find quite chilling. Two of the cornerstones of a fascist regime are a pervading state propaganda push and a stong corporate/state union to the exclusion of the common man. We can see both things happening here in spades.

After all I believe it was the head of ABC who told the asian Wall Street Journal that it was for the best of his company that he came out in support of Bush (I believe that was Bush's 2004 re-election bid ).

Another frightening aspect of this whole thing is their push to get this thing shown in public schools. I think they really need to be called to the mat on this as well as any school that goes along. Since when are dramatizations to be used as teaching tools. If my child was in a school that chose to expose her to this right wing propaganda I would raise holy hell.

Keep up the good fight Mahablog. If America is to be saved from fascism I beleive it will be through the work of people like you since our corporate media has sold it's soul to the devil.
