Prediction

So often when a Big Shot is caught doing something naughty, this news is followed by admissions from his friends and colleagues: “We knew Mr. Big Shot was [choose one or more: taking bribes, cheating on his wife, in the closet, addicted to painkillers, addicted to porn, soliciting minors, a giant bloodsucking worm] but we all hoped he would get over it before he harmed himself [i.e., got caught].”

After reading Wolcott (via Avedon), my prediction is that someday we’ll find out that so-called recovered alcoholic George W. Bush was drinking the whole time he was in the White House, and the White House staff and a big chunk of Republican leadership and some Democrats and half of the White House press corps knew about it, but were just hoping (for his sake, of course) that he’d straighten himself out before he got caught harmed himself.

Wanna bet?

  1. Having been in Austin for several years, I can attest that Bush’s “problem” has here been an open secret of a sort since he originally won the governor’s mansion. The prevailing notion has always been that he in fact never stopped drinking in the first place.

  2. I want to know who specifically was behind the Bush “puppet’ Whitehouse.
I would love to know the truth behind this dismal failure of a president.

I would not take a bet about bush’s drinking.
With his history, you would think they would be more concerned about the twins drinking.
Drinking does not seem to be a concern of this family.

  3. Oh no, Jesus cleaned Bush up!..He’s now a godly man, and the old coke snortin’/wine bibber has past away.
Way cool.. Jesus is one awesome guy..I hear that according to the abstinence only program that the wingnuts are hawking… that participants in the program are eligible to recieve a renewed virginity.. Gee, sounds like a good deal, huh? I think I might try some of that.

I remember Nixon used to get bowl hugging drunk in the oval office.

  4. No matter what they will blame Dems. today Ralph Reed was on NPR trying to blame the Schiavo mess on the Dems- I kid you not. The denial is so deep- sorta like we coulda won vietnam if we hadn’t quit. I guess bush thinks he can beat alcohol all he has to do is quit

  5. No, Jesus returned as a Cheez-nip–the nacho flavored ones at that. Mmmm… I’d be much more willing to take communion in he were anyway. (And his blood Diet Pepsi!)

  6. I’d feel better if it was true. At least it would explain a hell of alot. As it is now, how do you explain such stupidity????

  7. It’s “recovering” alcoholic. No such thing as a “recovered” alcoholic. If he lapses it’s a personal tragedy for him.

His presidency has been a collective tragedy for the nation … whether or not he drinks.

  8. Of coarse it’s Clinton’s fault. George drinks cause he knows he can’t follow Clinton’s act. bush got it so messed up, that HE is the blowjob in this administration.

  9. He’ll probably still be drunk when we lurch into Iran. The monster isn’t dead yet, and wants more. We need to make sure the “go long” option — or even the “go big” option — in Iraq doesn’t segue right into “go on” to Iran …

Tank of gas: too much. Prescription refill: too much. Iraq war: WAY too much. Dick Cheney on bending the rules: priceless.

According to Sy Hersh in the New Yorker, Cheney and his neocon colleagues still hope to hit Iran with a military strike despite a Democratic Congress, and may have the means to pull it off. What do we have to do to keep him from pursuing a military option in Iran? Drive a wooden stake through his heart?

  10. “It’s “recovering” alcoholic. No such thing as a “recovered” alcoholic. If he lapses it’s a personal tragedy for him. His presidency has been a collective tragedy for the nation … whether or not he drinks. ”

I agree. But I think that in the case of someone who was as far gone as Bush reportly was, then has a period of abstinence/sobriety, then starts using again, the chances of that person being able to keep up appearances are pretty slim.

In other words if Bush was drinking/drugging it would almost certainly be obvious, not a matter of speculation.
