[...] That got me to do a bit of Googling that lead me to a pair of interesting blog entires attempting to explain the religious background of each politician. Mazie Hirono is listed as belonging to Jodo Mission, a sect that I encountered frequently growing up in Hawai’i. My impression of Jodo is that it’s not as philosophical as most Westerners perceive Buddhism, I’d describe most of the Jodo Mission services I’ve attended (mostly funerals, which might bias my impression) as resembling your most mundane and calm Christian Church service, except with chanting and bells.
Sadly, I did not even know this until I saw it on Wikipedia.

Needless to say, I'm gleefully posting about it on my own blog. Nice to see some more diversity in our government. :)

Great post, as usual. Your posts are always well researched, thought out, and presented in an understanding way. On a personal level, I find most of the posts too long, but that has more to do with my preferences for shorter posts.

This was great because you explained a nice basis of Buddhism, you presented some of the sects of this religion, and you showed their main tenets. I too look forward to the Hank Johnson story.

One of the many, but I think most negative aspects of our American culture, has been the exploitation of fear of other
Cultures that Bush has kept pushing on our psyche. I would bet that 95+% of our population could not tell you about what a Muslim is, believes in, or has varients within the religion. This counts for our country's perception of all non western religions. We really have no concept of who they are and what they are about.

Bush has abused this lack of knowledge of world religions by the general populace of this country by telling lies as facts for a country that want's to believe its believers.

[...] As I’ve said in previous posts, two of the new House Democrats are Buddhists — the first Buddhists ever elected to the U.S. Senate. One of the two, Maizie Hirono of Hawaii, is discssed here. Now let’s crash ahead to the other Buddhist congressperson, who is Hank Johnson of Georgia. Yes, Georgia. [...]

The above is sarcasm, not my opinion. I forget that there is a wider audience than the regulars I am fond of reading. It is, however representative of a FEW people in their conscious mind, and too damn close to the opinion of a LOT of people who have not taken a hard look at their prejudices. I painted an ugly picture and I am asking those who support discrimination in America and war in the mid-east. Is this a picture of you?

Barbara, REAL AMERICAN PATRIOTS are not at war with Buddhists. They are at war with the religion of Islam. The only Islamics who will be spared are the ones who embrace democracy and capitalism; they will be required to recognize Israel and allow Christian missionaries to bring the real Sacred Word of Jesus Christ to those who have been robbed of access to the one true faith whic is enshrined in the American Constitution (or should have been).
