I thought of a great metaphor:

Imagine a 10 yr old boy whose older brother has gone off to college. Kid aquires the long-coveted RC airplane, much used, slightly damaged but still functional. Kid decides he's going to make it better than ever. Kid takes it apart, makes ill-advised modifications, can't get it back together properly. Won't read the manual, ask for help from the RC store or even Daddy. Instead, tinkers more, damages more, finally gets frustrated and smashes plane to bits with hammer.

That's Bush's Middle East foreign policy.
