The coverage of the Rudy years in New York is great, but I have yet to see anyone mention the first reaction "America's Mayor" had after 9/11. Rudy floated the idea of postponing the impending mayoral election until "order" could be restored, thus allowing himself to remain as mayor until he decided it was safe to hold an election. Thank goodness Lincoln didn't take that route in 1864 or FDR in 1944. Rudy will just be a slightly smarter Bush: an enemy to every Constitutionally guarateed liberty most of us still hold dear.

Swami -- that was his second wife, Donna Hanover. His lawyer also said some horrendous things about her; Giuliani claimed that you can't control what a lawyer says... yeah, right. The reason people pay the fees charged by Raoul Felder is that Felder will make outrageous statements about the opposition, and the clients know and want it.

I have several times injected myself into conversations I overhear on buses, etc. when people are praising RG and claiming he saved the city from crime, etc. I explain the things he didn't do and can't claim credit for and yet does. Crime started coming down during David Dinkins administration. Times Square's clean up actually began in the early 1980s when developers began buying up all the small, one-parcel lots and putting together the larger sized parcels required for large office buildings. It had nothing to do with RG; in either 1980 or 1981 I went on a tour of the area sponsored by the American Institute of Architects, the purpose of which was to explain the planning and work being done by developers to change Times Square.

Hey Maha, If you're doing a partII on Giuliani be sure to include at least a paragraph on that schucks love life. I have vague recollections of Giuliani blowing off one of his women folk by way of a public humiliation. I forget the details, but I do remember thinking Giuliani is the lowest to pull a cheap trick like that...on par with Newt Gingrich serving divorce papers on a wife who was in the midst of fighting for her life in a battle with cancer.
Real men not only love Jesus..they dump their old ladies for younger models who are more consistant with their egos.

How do New York Republicans feel about Guiliani?

Because they are the ones who will be voting for him (in that home state decision).

For all that we think of the far-right religionists as caring about bedroom issues, and personal morality, they don't. Limbaugh, and Gingrich are heroes to them. They may abandon Rev. Haggard, but they rallied round DeLay and stuck by Hyde.

What they do care about is how he acts toward Muslims; and Rudi is all over them. His campaign may self-destruct, but he managed to get elected twice, despite how New Yorkers feel about him, so he has some political chops, and he is more power hungry than Bush; with more brains too. He has some of Cheney's attitudes, and he wants the White House (as modified by Cheney, Yoo, the Bybee memo and Gonzales).

McCain is dead meat, Brownback isn't really running, and that leaves Rudi for the base to rally round.

I'm reasonably certain that Rudy doesn't have a chance in you know where with the religious conservatives who make up such a large portion of the Republican base.

Thank you, maha. Just today I finally allowed myself to picture a Rudy presidency, and it was chilling. Those with the knowledge of his tenure in NY need to get the word out so as to stop this guy before the tribal leaders of the right-wing anoint him.
