Publicus -- And I am getting really tired of hotheads like yourself who are more interested in bellyaching than taking pragmatic steps that might, you know, actually end the war. I realize that facing physical and political reality is tedious for you. But nothing -- NOTHING, dude -- will get done until there's a whopping majority in Congress willing to do it, and the practical reality is that to create that majority means winning over more Republicans. So instead of griping why don't you focus on helping to persuade Republicans in Congress to change their views? That would actually be USEFUL.

Now, get lost.

P.S. -

I'm getting really tired of supposed war opponent who are afraid to end the war. Or who still believe "compromise" is possible with the Bush administration.

Remember Bush's "compromise" with Bush on torture?

The only way to end the war is to cut off funds. I say, fund the withdrawal in small steps after it begins. I have heard no other credible way to end the war in the face of a president who is determined to continue it.

"This requires very careful planning and coordination."

Well, then it's going to be a slaughter no matter what. Remember, Bush is commander in chief. It's HIS planning.

That said, I stand by my position. We can provide more fund for withdrawal after the withdrawal begins. Bush needs to start NOW.

Let him use the money to get out troops out before it runs out in June. We’ve got great big transport planes to bring them home. Use them.

Retreats aren't that easy. Unless there's some way to bring all the troops home simultaneously, you have to provide for the safety of the last to leave so they aren't slaughtered. This requires very careful planning and coordination. There's also the matter of retrieving munitions, records, civilian contractors, etc. It's not going to be nearly so simple as you imagine it to be, nor as cheap. Even if they started tomorrow, a redeployment that provides for maximum safety for the troops probably wouldn't be accomplished by June.

I just had an idea. When Bush is no longer President, he can go to Iraq and serve as Maliki's assistant gopher. He's not qualified to be a full fledged gopher.

I think the spending bill already gives Bush too much. I hope he vetoes it, and gets no more funding bills. Let him use the money to get out troops out before it runs out in June. We've got great big transport planes to bring them home. Use them.

In my fantasy universe, the Republicans in Congress accept reality and join the Democrats in overriding the President's veto. That one step would take us a long way down the road towards restoring the image of democracy abroad and rebuilding our country's leadership position in the world. Sadly, that level of statesmanship no longer exists.
