Of course, Fred Hiatt is majorly ticked off that Harry Reid's cut off the GOP's escape routes: http://phoenixwoman.wordpress.com/2007/07/19/every-so-often-harry-reid-reminds-us-that-he-really-was-a-boxer-in-his-youth/

"I’m no military expert, but I take it Fred Hiatt isn’t, either, so I say my opinion is at least as informed as his. I question whether a “residual” force could be kept in Iraq for very long".

"If I were an American, as I am an Englishman, while a foreign troop was landed in my country, I never would lay down my arms--never--never--never".

Is Wapo Learning or Just Hedging Their Bets?

Business wise this is a smart move for Wapo. One has to wonder when the NYT will learn what Wapo seems to be learning, a lesson everyone who is in business learns over time and it is called CYA, which means, Cover Your Ass, for all events.

Fred ought to go out and get a real job. Being editor of Pravda on the Potomac is not a real job. Going into Iraq in the first place was a really stupid thing to do and ol' Fred supported it. That makes him really stupid, too.

Someone in Congress & the Press needs to make the point in this way.

Suppose you were buyin a car and you found one you like. The seller, who happens to be a salesman named Bush says you can have it with terms.. Pay by the month. "How much?", you ask. "Does not matter. I will decide later." says Bush. "For how long?" you ask. Bush looks indignant. "We can work that out later depending on conditions on the road." You balk. "What kind of deal is it when I don't know how much it will cost or for how long?" " You are obstructiong a good deal", says Bush.. Just sign here or take a walk."

So Reid walked. An agreement without specific terms for the pullout in terms of numbers of troops & dated is a charade. The fact is that an inflexible adherance to a schedule COULD result in chaos. But we need to be up-front with the governement in the green-zone. To avoid the chaos, you need to work for political stability through comprimise which WE can not impose. We can't. It's up to you. Because the schedule for troop withdrawls is a done deal.

The new smoke & mirrors talking points is that the administration wants to re-deploy. And they do. When they are good and ready - not before. Under the pressure they are under, they are willing to promise anything w/out specific terms. That won't fly. We won't buy a used car from that man, without an airtight contract.
