[...] I started to write a comment to Maha’s latest installment of The Wisdom of Doubt, which was about fundamentalism, but felt there was enough of importance here for others, to promote it out of the comments. The important part is not so much my thoughts, but the work of Sara Robinson (at Orcinus), who has done what in my mind is some major thinking on authoritarianism and fundamentalism, much of it from her own personal experience with scores of people who are leaving or have left these worlds: [...]

But the anti Catholic attitudes are still there, just undercover. I was also raised Lutheran (an Episcopalian mother and father from a lapsed Catholic family). My Lutheran minister used to rail against the Pope and the "Romans" in general from the pulpit. My teenaged self thought he was weird. All this 45 years ago.

BJU -- Catholic hatred isn't limited to Bob Jones University. It has been a mainstay of much evangelicalism since the 18th century. Where I grew up little children were taught to hate Catholics. Being Lutheran, I was left out of that, but I can tell you stories. My point, though, is that these days (unlike the early 19th century, when from time to time they would form mobs and torch Catholic churches) they keep the anti-Catholic rhetoric out of public view.

The Pope has no credibility with American fundamentalists, of course, but I would like to see them go on record that the Pope is against God.

old news.

Ian "my daughter goes to Bob Jones University" Paisley used to have a longer explanation about the whole antichrist thing on the BJU website, but all that was taken down a bit ago because BJU is trying to improve its image.

I understand they still teach it at the school.

I was raised to be a fundie but I managed to escape when they weren't looking. I watched the Blumenthal video and I recognize everything they talk about.

One thing I noticed is that the fundies pick and choose what parts of the Bible are "literal" and what parts are "allegorical" or "prophecy."

They are anti-science but they sure don't mind the benefits of modern technology. Many of them are college educated, and they do some real mental contortions to harmonize their beliefs to undeniable reality.

Here's an example: Evolution is false, and the world is only 6,000 years old. The reason that there are fossils (and fossil fuels) is that when God created the world 6,000 years ago, he made it a trillion years old.
