Excellent excellent EXCELLENT post.

Democracy implies difference & plurality. “National unity” (if there really is such a thing) is implictly anti-democratic.

The strength of any democracy is in the ability of the citizenry to think, assess, make informed choices & take on their own responsibilities for those choices. “National unity” may have the appearance of “strength” but it is vacuous, baseless & weak in reality because it is all based on cheap slogans & not rational thought.

As Simone Weil and many other thinkers have pointed out, the mob mentality (what Weil called “the Great Beast”) short circuits any real thinking & everyone can be pushed along some great emotional tide– next thing you know, this “support” can be put to the service of any great evil. And it has.

It all stems from Bush’s moral leadership failure. I certainly can’t get behind a leader whose every third word is nothing but a deception or a lie. A man who reeks of pride and arrogance while being aglow with foolishness. He’s repulsive as a moral agent, and in my heart I can find warmer sentiments for the likes of John Wayne Gace

Forget the national unity.. If Bush and his actions are the rallying point for unity or the defining characteristic of what America should be.
I’m not so starry eyed to think America isn’t without its flaws, but Bush isn’t directing us toward that shining city upon the hill..he’s leading us off unto the path destuction. He’s morally bankrupting our nation. It’s there for all to see if they’d only takeoff their blinders of false patriotism.

Stu’s memory is impaired.
Since 9/11 we have had another American city/state destroyed and several states hit hard by hurricanes.
These acts did not bring us together because the same lying, incompetent administrators were still in power.

The American people are not to blame for this failure in any sense EXCEPT for the people that voted for this administration and the people that CONTINUE to support and enable this administration to continue it’s path of destruction.
What nitwit wants another 9/11? That is a solution to a problem?

Bykofsky is a “full of it” idiot. I was not on the band wagon before 9/11 and I wasn’t on the band wagon AFTER 9/11. I hated Bush before 9/11, I hated him after 9/11 and NOTHING will ever change that, NOTHING. Yes, we were attacked. Life did not come to a stand still for millions of other people. Get a grip.

Now we can be a part of one from the safety of our own living rooms by voting for wingnuts without hardly even being directly and immediately affected. However, there is a delayed reaction that no member of a lych mob will ever own up to.

And if Osama bin Laden sends out instructions from his hiding place in Pakistan directing a bunch of (mostly Saudi) Arabs to perpetrate another horrific attack on the United States, what then?

Will we join together as a nation and attack . . . Iran? Venezuela?
