[...] Something or someone did knock Rhodes down. The story says that she needs dental work. Once he gathered himself and got more facts Air America’s Jon Elliott apologized. A momentous event in these times when Republicans have created a culture of denial. Both by word and deed the Right from Bush to Limbaugh has tried to teach America to never admit your mistakes and never ever apologize. In normal times Elliott’s apology and correction would be a non-event. An ordinary person doing the right thing. But these are not normal times. Elliott’s admission that he jumped the gun and then apologizing is a near revolutionary act. Unlike Michelle Malkin or Rush Limbaugh, Elliot didn’t dig a deeper hole for himself and start lashing out with incoherent scatter shot attacks on others. Elliot made a mistake and then acted like an adult. We seem to be on a running narrative the last two weeks. A stark contrast has emerged between the infantile hate, lies and smear campaigns of the rabid Right against more moderate Americans that keep exposing the Right’s vicious political tactics. Those attacks are more then partisan differences they are personal with Republicans such as Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Malkin, who unlike Elliot would rather drown in their own venom then admit they have both lied to defend their position and used brutish attacks for no other reason then to advance an agenda of hate. That bastion of Conservative values and high toned right-wing rhetoric that passes for intellect on the Right, The National Review writes While the debate around the Frost family at least initially centered around their relative wealth, the issue really at hand is one of bad behavior.
About that story Canadian Reader mentions from Oprah's website. I've heard variations on this before. I suspect that it is a rightie urban legend, along the lines of St. Ronnie's Welfare Queen joke. The teller usually alleges that it happened to him or her, or to a close friend. As is usual in these cases, St. Ronnie didn't let the facts bother him. He continued telling the joke long after people tried to acquaint him with the actual facts of the case.

The person that commented on Oprah's web site is lying and making it up. The food pantrys here in western Ohio can't keep stocked. Ain't none of the folks that utilize the food pantrys driving up in Mercedes or BMWs. They are driving 25 year old Chevvys and Fords that have a lot of rust. And you can see the look of despair whether you see them at Walmart or Aldi's or the food pantry.

There are just too many one adult households trying to survive on $9/hour part time jobs.

Lots of people truly believe that there are no needy people in the States. Here's a quote from a vociferous opponent of universal health care who posted on Oprah's website in the thread on Michael Moore:

"On the other hand I have voluteered for handing out Christmas Gifts during the Holiday season during a government funded organization. When I worked there my own household income would have qualified to be on the recipient end. A young woman stated that she could not get over the clothing & the cars that had been through that day. She was accurate in being dismayed as I watched the Mercedes, BMW's, brand new caravans were the majority of the vehicles seen that day. Designer clothes & leather goods adorned the 'poverty' stricken citizens as they picked up their bags of goodies for their families. I had arrived in my white chevy cavalier hatchback, rusted & duck taped w/over 100,000 miles & no air conditioning (not that I needed it in the winter, but I guarantee in the 90 degree summer heat they enjoyed the comfort of air conditioning while I did not have that luxury). I realized way back then that the term 'poverty' was abused by the majority."

You see, poverty doesn't exist. We all know that, right?
