Maha,

Yesterday I posted why I suspect we will be neck deep in a severe recession by the time of the general election next November.

It will be a Democratic landslide of monumental proportions. Let us just hope we have enough "pro-people" Reps in Congress.

the moral is, people see what they want to see

And if they see their wallet in better shape voting for Republicans, any excuse will do to keep voting that way. Even if they can't count change well enough to know what's really in their wallet.

Yet the Giuliani campaign springs back after every wound, like Rasputin.

A good line, Maha... :) And Rudy goes through women like Rasputin also. If it's got a pulse Rudy will love it and leave it. After all, the Vatican can always issue an annulment to buttress the sanctity of marriage.

Rudy Gigoloani will be as faithful to the Constitution as he was to his wives.

Dear not the senator: be careful what you wish for, you might get it. I remember well how unlikely W was in 1999; yet he got in, thanks to rigged votes and corrupt judges. I don't want to take any chances this time; the prospect of President Guiliani is too big a risk. For him to get elected would be irrational, and unreason is how these guys operate. So I hope his rivals zap him hard, early.

The media agenda-setters have somehow come to the consensus that the time for covering Rudy's many faults isn't until after he has the nomination. It seems that many of them are aware of his problems, but just don't feel like now is the time to discuss them.

I can only assume they worry that, if they actually covered the GOP candidates in detail, it would become clear that none of them are any good, which would make their 'horse race' coverage pointless. Who cares which of these guys wins? This would leave them with lots of airtime and column inches to fill with nothing. So they're pretending that the GOP has some actual Presidential timber, engaged in a serious contest, instead of a mob of flawed lunatic dwarves in an egotistic display.

Your 'liberal' media at its finest.

I think as a Democrat, the idea that the GOP would nominate Mitt or Rudy is very reassuring since both are so fatally flawed. I can easily foresee the lines of attack for the General Election:

Mitt is a shameless opportunist. His myriad flip-flops will make those charges much easier to show than against Kerry. And that was a classic example of how to use a politician's past statements can be used against him. As a Mass. resident, I can attest that Mitt does not wear well and with the scrutiny as the nominee on his Massachusetts record, his high point will be in February when he is well packaged in a crowded field, yet not well examined. He will melt by November under the spotlight.

With Rudy, the American people will have to choose and say that the Fire Fighters of NYC are bad guys in order for his 9/11 rep to stand up. They are going to savage him. Just think what millions of dollars of 527 independent advertising will be able to do. And then there are all the other lines of attack laid out in Rich's column.

Since Thompson is a joke and not ready for primetime, McCain and Huckabee are the nominees I fear most. How to contrast them is much harder to foresee since their vulnerabilities are significantly less obvious. I would prefer that they are defeated in the primaries.

So IMHO, in the interest of getting the Republicans out of the White House, I would just as soon Mitt or Rudy get the nomination.
