Boy, that Marten's interview is a real doozy. Just this morn I read that in 1934 Ben-Gurion said that Zionism would "bring a blessing to the Arabs of Palestine, and they have no good cause to oppose us." (Marten's remark that the Chinese occupation of Tibet has benefitted the Tibetans - implying that the Tibetans should be grateful for the occupation - echoes the Ben-Gurion remark.)

The Arab leader at the time, Musa Alami's answer to Ben-Gurion voiced what conquerors, occupiers, reformers, do-gooders, democracers, missionaries...are forever incapable of getting. Alami said, "I would prefer that the country remain impoverished and barren for another hundred years, until we ourselves are able to develop it on our own."

That was in 1934. This is 2008 and 'we' still don't get it.
