Not So Fast …

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the Wisconsin Senate Democrats are about to end their exile and come home. However, it appears Mr. Murdoch was indulging in wishful thinking. The senators told a Milwaukee NBC affiliate that the report was “more fiction than fact.”

Elsewhere — Throughout this episode, conservatives have said the Wisconsin senators are trying to overturn the last election by obstructing the judgment of the Senate majority. Ezra Klein makes the point that the senators are “filibustering with their feet.” Their delaying tactics have given the voters of Wisconsin an opportunity to learn more about the union-busting “budget” bill, and polls show they don’t like it much. Further, Ezra says, “The Democrats have shown the voters exactly what it is that they voted for in Walker.” Heh.

And what’s in Walker’s budget? Amanda Terkel writes that some of Walker’s “savings” come from de-funding Planned Parenthood and other family planning programs. The bill even repeals a state law that requires commercial health insurers in the state to cover birth control pills. Exactly what does that have to do with balancing Wisconsin’s budget?

Further, someone might point out to Walker that contraceptives are a lot cheaper than paying for pregnancy, childbirth, and infant care. The state’s health department said in 2008 that “expanding family planning services prevented an estimated 11,064 unplanned pregnancies and saved nearly $140 million in expenditures that would have been used to cover the births and health care costs of those children,” Terkel writes.

This is not a difficult thing to understand. Either Walker is extremely stupid, or he doesn’t really care about saving money as much as using the budget to impose his moral “values” on Wisconsin.

  1. Just listen to that fake Koch brother call again, everyone. This boy’s a “True Believer.”
He’s been propandized by the wingnut Wurlitzer his whole life:
    -Suckled on Rush’s massive teats.
    -Fed and nourished by FOX.
-Paper-trained by the right wing’s printing welfare program.
    -Schooled by their think tanks.

He is the real Conservative deal. Make no mistake about it. If it’s part of any right wing plans, he’s all in, spouting talking points as if they were original ideas.
He is a very dangerous man, in that, like Huck, he seems nice, but beneath that affable exterior is a hard-core idealogue – ready, willing, and able to carry out whatever is assigned to him.

I hope the Democrats stay away from WI until there’s a stone cold guarantee from the Republican Senators that they won’t pull a stunt.
And even then, I wouldn’t trust them as far as I could throw them.

  2. Sounds like WSJ is becoming the Fox News of the financial sector — not that the bankers have much contact with reality to begin with.

Either Walker is extremely stupid, or he doesn’t really care about saving money as much as using the budget to impose his moral “values” on Wisconsin.

He’s not stupid — he’s probably not all that smart, but not stupid — he’s just doing what he was paid to do. He’s going after all the radical right’s favorite targets, starting with unions, women and poor people. Keep your eye on Indiana, Ohio, New Jersey, and Florida, as well.

  3. LOL!
    “Galt: The Musical!”

Lyrics, adapted from the novel, by Megan McArdle.
    Music by Ted Nugent.

Somewhere, Rogers and Hammerstein are rolling in their graves.

  4. And Walker keeps saying that the Wisconsin ‘protesters’ aren’t “doing their job.” No, Mr. Walker, they are doing their job. The House and Senate in Washington would do well to emulate them. Just maybe we’d see some meaningful legislation instead of what can only be called ‘train-wreck’ legislation coming out of DC?

  5. Since the WSJ is owned by Rupert Murdoch, it’s no wonder it is becoming the Fox News of the financial sector.

Walker and the Republicans war on the unions is also a war on women.

  6. Well, whenever I want my news and information to be shitty, I always turn to something owned by “Merde-och.”

  7. Merde-och: a little joke for the french speakers. Walker is stupid, and is a true believer, which makes him extremely dangerous. He can’t think his way out of a paper bag. Much less a political quandry like this. He’s doing his George Bush impersonation and continues saying the same talking points. Everyone now, “The state is broke, the state is broke, the state is broke.” He is the Foxnews/rightwing radio candidate. We have a few doozies here on talk radio who push him and his agenda 24/7. One is associated with that Milwaukee NBC affiliate. Lets see how badly they report on this. I don’t know how this will end but I do know that there is an energized left wing in this state right now. There are 600 people collecting signatures for a recall of one of the republican state senators. I was going to volunteer but don’t see the point now, I’ll volunteer with one of the lesser recall efforts.

    • You go, buckyblue! BTW, did you see the story about teabaggers volunteering to clean up after the protesters?

  8. This is not a difficult thing to understand. Either Walker is extremely stupid, or he doesn’t really care about saving money as much as using the budget to impose his moral “values” on Wisconsin.

Or, using the budget to score talking points with his supporters. I don’t ever assume that someone like Walker cares, one way or another… merely that he thinks it looks good to someone else.

  9. You got that right, Hunter.
I’m thinking Swami and I can get together and build a gallows that we can rent in a couple of years and make a tidy profit.
Our Govn’r just killed our rail project which would have brought us tens of thousands of jobs, and gas is flirting with $4.00 per gallon. Who needs mass transit? BRILLIANT!

  10. “Really stupid” is not an impediment in the GOP these past few decades; it’s a check box.
