  1. Has there been a politician in recent history who loved being in front of a crowd more?

And who was better at it?

  2. Sorta OT for this post, but maybe not. Has a lot to do with presidential charisma and the ability to make friggin’ eye contact, Mitt. Found this on HuffPo:

On Tuesday, Romney spoke to supporters in Iowa, recalling a chance encounter with a former Navy SEAL while mistakenly attending a Christmas party in San Diego a few years ago.

“I met some remarkable people, one of whom was a former Navy SEAL,” Romney said. “I just learned a few days ago that he was one of the two former Navy SEALs killed in Benghazi. It broke my heart.”

Romney didn’t directly provide Doherty’s name, but his campaign later confirmed his identity. He was one of four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens, killed during a violent assault on the consulate in Benghazi last month.

Boston’s WHDH later reached out to Doherty’s mother, Barbara, to get her reaction to Romney’s campaign trail anecdote.

“I don’t trust Romney. He shouldn’t make my son’s death part of his political agenda,” she told WHDH. “It’s wrong to use these brave young men, who wanted freedom for all, to degrade Obama.”

Doherty similarly decried the politicization of her son’s death in an interview with the Boston Herald last month.

Glen Doherty’s friend, Elf Ellefsen, also spoke with Seattle’s KIRO, expressing similar disagreement with Romney’s mention of his friend’s death.

According to Ellefsen, Doherty found his exchange with Romney to be “insincere and stale.”

“Mitt Romney approached him ultimately four times, using this private gathering as a political venture to further his image,” Ellefsen told KIRO. “He kept introducing himself as Mitt Romney, a political figure. The same introduction, the same opening line … [Doherty] said it was pathetic and comical to have the same person come up to you within only a half hour, have this person reintroduce himself to you, having absolutely no idea whatsoever that he just did this 20 minutes ago, and did not even recognize Glen’s face.”

So much going on there. First: how does one “mistakenly” attend a Christmas party (especially if one is Mittens)? Second: thank you, Barbara Doherty, for your son’s service, and I am so very very sorry for your loss. Third: What. A. Smarm. Mittens is pure evil. Fourth: perhaps after he loses the election, Mittens will have time to enroll in the William J. Clinton Smarm-to-Charm School of Edumacation. Bill sure as heck would remember people he’d just met a few minutes earlier.

  3. Mitt is so considerate…

A Romney aide told ABC News today that the Republican candidate will respect Mrs. Doherty’s wish and stop telling the story on campaign stops about how he met Doherty a few years ago.

  4. Why doesn’t Mitt get a couple of his campaign ghouls to run down to Arlington National Cemetery and dig up Audie Murphy so Mitt can have a photo op session that might help gain the veteran/military vote.

  5. Aside from all the insensitivity to the family, what is that anecdote supposed to tell us about Mitt? That his heart only breaks when people he’s actually met die tragically? Why does it matter that he accidentally met this guy once? Is that supposed to mean they have a special connection?

Are we supposed to think that his heart didn’t break for the other guys, since he hadn’t accosted them at a party to which he wasn’t invited?

Like so many of Mitt’s stories, this one just further convinces me that he doesn’t actually understand other humans or their emotions.

  6. Aside from all the insensitivity to the family, what is that anecdote supposed to tell us about Mitt?

That he’s a sociopath who wants to be like everybody else. It’s like his Cranbrook episode, he knows he did something wrong because everybody says he did, but he doesn’t know why he did what he did was wrong. He’s perplexed because his emotions are damaged.

Last time I got a psychiatric evaluation the doctor concluded his report with the sentence.”. He knows the difference between right and wrong and is able to adhere to the right.”
That’s the point of departure for a guy like Mitt… that missing element that makes us normal.

  7. I still can’t get past “mistakenly” attending a Christmas party… which means Mitt crashed it?

dig up Audie Murphy so Mitt can have a photo op

Eeyew! And you know Mitt would if he could.
