House Republicans Are, Um, Confused

As I understand it: House GOP leadership had scheduled a procedural vote today to begin debate on the Iran deal. The whackjob fringe scuttled the vote.

Members of the conservative House Freedom Caucus are demanding that the Obama administration send side deals between Iran and international nuclear inspectors to Congress as part of the Iran deal now under consideration. Opponents of the deal have argued that the clock on congressional consideration of the deal has not even begun until these side deals are submitted.

Under legislation approved earlier this year, Congress has 60 days to review the deal before the White House can begin lifting sanctions on Tehran, as required under the nuclear deal.

Rep. Peter Roskam (R-Ill.) has offered a resolution that would prevent a vote on the Iran deal until all of the documents of the international agreement — including the deals between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) are provided to Congress for review.

The 60 days are up on September 17. Also, there are enough Democrats committed to supporting the deal (42) that they could stop the delaying measure from being voted on in the Senate.

Ted Cruz is in on this:

Cruz explained:

“Those side deals have not been submitted to Congress. Under the terms of Corker-Cardin, the review period has not started, and does not start until the entire deal is submitted to Congress and the president cannot lift these sanctions until the review period expires.”

I’m not sure if they think they ought to get a say in whatever deals Iran makes with the IAEA, or what.  It’s pretty certain that after September 17, the President’s hands are untied and the deal will be made.

On the plus side, Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-WTF?) has vowed to quit Congress if the Iran deal goes through. Don’t let the door hit your butt on the way out, Louie.

Gosh I hope the republic can soldier on without him? So long Louie!

  2. This for a deal with broad public support and support from various non-Adelsteined Republicans, including Colin Powell.

  3. The 17th is when I go in for reconstructive ankle surgery.
Don’t expect to hear from me for a few weeks – maybe a month.
They’re going to put steel shafts through the ankle, held together by what looks like a circular erector set – designed by Torquemada, with help from the Gestapo and the NKVD.
    OY!!!

I’ll be in rehab for a few weeks after the operation, and I don’t want to take my laptop or Nook in with me, for fear I won’t walkout with them, but someone else will.
No walking for up to 3 months – except to pee and poop.
And no driving for the 3 to 6 months after that.

I’m not worried about me, I’m worried about my mom.
Meals on Wheels will bring meals Mon-Fri – after that, my sister will have to come on a weekend.

    No fun…

  4. Gulag – good luck! I hope the 2nd string takes good care of your mom (I’m sure they will). Boredom might be the worst thing in the end.

  5. Gulag: Wow, Mahablog just won’t be the same without you. I will definitely send you some healing energy and love and you will do great and be back before we know it. Will miss you though. As for boredom in rehab, forget it. They won’t leave you alone and you will beg for some peace and quiet. And I’m quite sure your Mom will be well taken care of.

  6. Good luck, Gulag.. I hope all goes well. You might want to reconsider disconnecting from your daily dose of the Mahablog for longer than any period that is absolutely necessary. I know guys like us who don’t really have a life desperately need that connection to humanity. Besides, it won’t be easy or healthy keeping all that vitriol directed at Repugs/conservatives bottled up without some sort of a relief valve.
Your absence will be felt and you will be missed. Hurry back!
