Judge Roy Moore is being accused of inappropriate relations with a minor. I’m not surprised in the least. However, the interesting development here is that Mitch McConnell and a bunch of other Republicans are telling Moore to drop out of the race if the allegations are true.
This tells me McConnell et al. really don’t want Moore in the Senate. If they supported him, they’d be blustering about liberal media slandering this upstanding virtuous Christian man blah blah blah.
At this point the Alabama ballot cannot be changed, but Moore could still withdraw or be disqualified by his state party. The guy Moore defeated for the nomination, Luther Strange, could run as a write-in candidate.
Meanwhile, the Democrats have adopted a unique strategy for helping Doug Jones, Moore’s Democratic opponent. Well, not so unique for the Democrats.

“I don’t have a sense at all that the DNC (Democratic National Committee) is anywhere in this state,” said Derryn Moten, chairman of the Department of History and Political Science at Alabama State University. “They don’t want to damage or do anything that might damage Jones’ chance to win that Senate seat,” he said. The party “doesn’t want to do anything that would be an albatross around Jones’ neck.”
That’s so … lame.
Good strategy (for once) for the Dems. Let Jones, an Alabaman, figure out how to proceed in that deep red culture. Jones can reiterate his pledge to “not embarrass the state” without throwing mud.

Biden has been to Alabama a couple times and raised money for Jones as has John Lewis. Just because the national party is keeping it low, doesn’t mean Democrats aren’t helping him. Per Politico a few months ago:

Joe Trippi is his campaign manager and he’s got the support of Democratic aligned PACs. We could choose to see this as another of the many “Democrats are weak” stories or maybe we could see it as the Jones campaign running the campaign how it sees best for Alabama.

Maybe the Dem's in Alabama realize that the battle lines are already drawn and the numbers won't change no matter what they do. Moore's base of rabid supporters aren't going to abandon him even if he is a child molester. To them being a pedophile is not reason enough to stop supporting a true man of God who is determined to drive the sodomites back into the shadows of society, protect the unborn, and defend God's holy word.
The reality of it is that there are nutjobs out there who are able to justify Moore's behavior as being in sync with scriptural precedent (mythology). Reason or common decency isn't going to penetrate that type of a mindset. So in all probability the needle will fluctuate very little,if at all.
Moore is in a position where he has to remain silent because if he so much as acknowledges even knowing these accusers he's convicted himself in the court of public opinion of being a pedophile. What interest does a 34 year old college graduate with a law degree have with a 14 year old child. He certainly wasn't seeking intellectual stimulation. So old Roy has no option except to flee. The democrats strategy in AL is old hat for them: let's keep a low profile, stay quiet and meek, and maybe no one will notice us. And if you have to talk policy just mimic the republican. Then (somehow) the voters will see us as the "adults in the room" and we'll win. No matter how many times that hasn't worked for them, they still think its the path to victory.
The democrats have yet to learn that what Harry Truman said decades ago remains true: "Given the choice between a Republican and someone who acts like a Republican, people will vote for the real Republican all the time"
Democrats still have not learned a basic lesson: no matter how bad your opponent is, you still need to give the voters a reason to vote for you.
