From Bush's speech at today's naturalization ceremony at Monticello.... Where he was heckled.. :)

"When you raise your hands and take your oath, you will complete an incredible journey. ... From this day forward, the history of the United States will be part of your heritage."

Yeah, even the torture, the illegal and immoral invasion of Iraq, Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo, and all the nasty slime the Bush administration has smeared on our proud history. I wonder if Bush was giving the new citizens a chance to back out, or just warning them that the stink if his disgrace will be stuck to them once they're sworn in.

Happy 4th of July, everybody!

So today we celebrate the day we declared freedom from Great Britain. We now send our warriors around the world to bring freedom to others: We call them freedom-fighters.

The late and much missed George Carlin posed the following. We have crime-fighters who fight crime. We have fire-fighters who fight fires. We have freedom-fighters who???

Whenever I read comments like #20, by someone who thinks him/herself unutterably clever and righteous but who has completely missed the point, I get very tired. But I suppose I should address this.

When an ambitious woman gets trashed for being successful and ambitious I would call it misogyny all the time. The fact remains that the really ugly sexism aimed at Clinton wasn't why she lost the nomination. If anything, the sympathy vote was her biggest asset. And it would be really great if people could just address the sexism issue without wrapping themselves in the gloriously self-indulgent mantle of victimhood. Thanks much.

Read the above three times, child. Try to take it in before commenting here again.

Shorter John McCain on Guantanamo and Abu Grahib:

"This time, WE'RE running the Hanoi Hilton."

Is this an example of Stockholm syndrome?

Yes, Hillary Clinton got hit by a lot of really ugly sexism, but it wasn’t why she lost the nomination. If anything, the sympathy vote was her biggest asset. And it would be really great if people could just address the sexism issue without wrapping themselves in the gloriously self-indulgent mantle of victimhood.

Goodness me, I had no idea old Smokey was so spiritual.

I particularly loved:

The twisting strata of the great mountains and the pulsings of volcanoes are my love burning deep in the earth....

If only we humans had the sense not to build our civilization so close to the places where that love boils to the surface.

Thanks for sharing the wonderful sutra. I'll send all my best thoughts and hopes to the monks in the Carmel valley.

I do not know where Scott Shane got his info, but in Philippe Sands "Torture Team" there is nary a mention of where the 15 or 18 techniques came from, except several mentions of the U.S. Navy's SERE training as a possible source.

Mr. Sands appears to have been very thorough.

maha, Very interesting comments but your 'point' - and mine I might add - is finally "If we begin to define 'sexism' as 'everything negative...we lose" is right on. We as women do not ask for special treatment, we ask for equal treatment.
