Relax, and Enjoy the Music

From the Vivaldi GloriaEt in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis. And on earth, peace to men of good will.

  1. After hearing this song for years I finally wiki’d it. “Mele Kalikimaka”, derived from the Hawaiian pronunciation of “Merry Christmas”. Since Hawaiian does not have all English phonemes, in particular the “R” and “S”, “Merry Christmas” becomes “Mele Kalikimaka” (note the substitution of L’s for R’s, and K’s for S’s). “Mele Kalikimaka” is therefore a transliteration, not a translation of “Merry Christmas”.

  2. Bob — ah. And did you know that Japanese people cannot say “oy vey”? It comes out “oree bay.” I have witnessed this.
