Onward Christian Kidnappers

Here’s an update on the crew of evangelicals who got caught trying to smuggle stray children out of Haiti.

First, the lawyer who has been representing the evangelicals in Haiti courts faces sex trafficking charges that pre-date the Haiti kidnapping episode. He also has no license to practice law in Haiti. Make of that what you will.

It appears the accused kidnappers for Christ have yet to be released. But never fear; their cause has been taken up by U.S. righties, who are outraged at how the kidnap crew is being treated. Glenn Greenwald points out that U.S. righties have, um, a double standard.

In other news — there’s a long article from the New York Times Sunday magazine on the ongoing efforts of conservative Christians to use public schools to indoctrinate children. Highly recommended.

  1. The Texas article is scary.
Why can’t they just “homeschool” their own idiots, and leave everyone elses children alone?
Oh yeah, God’s talking to them.

  2. Thanks for the link to the NYT article. Since the bulk of Texans I know are sane and liberal believers in mainstream denominations, I can forget that the state is full of those who would proudly rewrite history and everything else to fit their own highly peculiar belief system.

Had I not already reached the point of despair at the failure of Washington state’s public education system, I’d be quite worried about what Texas-driven textbooks would mean for my state.

Christians involved in sex trafficking, this must just be a big misunderstanding, I mean just look at the track record…

Hmmm…maybe the Christians had other designs on those children aside from finding them a better home than their own parents could provide. If they somehow cause Roe v. Wade to be reversed they’ll have an ample supply of children for adoption in this country.

Still, I think child protective services should vet these people and if they proceed, also the homes into which the kids would go. Their efforts seem to have been outside the law from the very start which compels one to consides whether they’d proceed legally if they somehow did manage to get their child-lovin’ little mits on some kiddies.

God (or better someone real…maybe in a law enforcement capacity) help us if any of the kids were adopted as altar boys in the Catholic church.
