Is Bachmann’s Degree Bogus? [Updated: Never Mind]

In her official campaign biography (and also on Wikipedia), Michele Backmann claims to have an LL.M. degree in tax law from William and Mary. But eagle17765 points out at Daily Kos points out that William and Mary doesn’t have an LL.M. program in tax law. I looked at the William and Mary Law School website, and by golly, there is no LL.M. in tax law offered there. The only LL.M. is designated for foreign students, in fact.

However, maybe they used to offer an LL.M. in tax law, back in 1988 when Bachman says she got hers. So don’t get too excited yet [update — one of the other Kossacks says this is the case, so never mind]. She got her J.D. from the school now known as Regent University, which became famous for supplying corrupt and incompetent Christian lawyers to the Bush Administration.

    • Her degree was from Oral Roberts University. Their law program wound up at Regent.

Right; as my post says (do read things all the way through) she got her J.D. from Regent. The LL.M. is a postgraduate degree.

  1. The real questionable character in Michele Bachmann closet, literally, is her husband.
Apparently, MN doesn’t require therapists to have a state licence, which her husband, the good Dr., doesn’t. He runs a clinic to help young men ‘pray away the gay:’

It even looks as if his PhD is phony:

And listen and watch Dr. Bachmann, the great Anti-gay warrior in action:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8spCOEePSo&feature=player_embedded

This guy make Mitch “Yertle the Anti-gay Gay Turtle” McConnell seem almost as macho as that serial schtupper of females, Arnold Schwarzenegger.

    Dr. Bachmann practically farts rainbows.

And he sounds like a gay Daffy Duck!

As as a person preying on people and their families who are paying to have him help their loved ones in “Praying the gay away,” rather than accept who they are, I have only one word for him – ‘Dethsppppicable!’

Jesus, if he showed up at the West Village Gay Pride Parade, they’d probably ask him to tone it down a bit.
And this from guys in costumes that Vegas strippers and Carmen Miranda would kill for!

If it weren’t for the fact that under her leadership this country would dissolve faster than an Alka Seltzer in a bucket of carbolic acid, it would be entertaining to have her as President, if only to see Dr. Bahmann as First Lady.

Note: To newcomers here, I am not making fun of him because he is gay, but because a lot of evidence points to him being gay, all while making money posing as an anti-gay crusader.

  2. Why would someone, who was already a JD, get a Master of Laws degree? Isn’t that similar to getting a Bachelors and then getting an Associates in a related field?

  3. I agree with Tulsan..The distinction that she was an ORU law school graduate is important because it carries even less credibility than someone mistakenly thinking she might have been a Regents graduate even though it is understood that Pat Roberson picked up the franchise when Oral’s dream went bust . An ORU law degree is the bottom of the barrel, and that connection to Bachmann needs to be emphasized.

Oral Roberts was the creator of the prosperity gospel and the concept of sowing financial seed into the Kingdom.. He’s done more to pervert Christianity to the circus it’s become today than any person on the planet. ” Throw down your crutches and walk”…Hallelujah… Hallelujah….Hallelujah !

  4. “Her degree was from Oral Roberts University. Their law program wound up at Regent”

Hmmm I wonder why they felt the need to change names? The fact that this wackadoodle (Bachmann) is mentioned as a serious candidate for president outside anything but a comedy sketch blows my mind.

  5. Yeah, Swami, I thought that was an important distinction and was surprised to get a chiding for pointing that out.

    From Wikipedia:

“In 1979, Bachmann was a member of the first class of the O.W. Coburn School of Law, a part of Oral Roberts University (ORU). In 1986 she received a J.D. degree from Oral Roberts University. She was a member of the final graduating class of the law school at ORU, and was part of a group of faculty, staff, and students who moved the ORU law school library to what is now Regent University.”

    • Yeah, Swami, I thought that was an important distinction

Whatever. I think Regent has a worse reputation than Oral Roberts.

  6. When I die I’ll go to heaven because I served my time in Hell..The U.S economy — 2008-2011.

  7. I think that whether you think an Oral Roberts University degree is suspect or not may depend on how well you remember Oral Roberts and his antics. It certainly gives a very negative connotation for me, and even some Evangelicals I know are quite embarrassed by any association with the guy.

Bachmann’s Alma Maters may have questionable academics, but she still put in the time and effort to complete her degrees. I think it shows more self-discipline and drive than Palin has ever demonstrated. Besides, given the anti-elitist bent of a significant fraction of the electorate, an ORU degree might get her more votes than one from Harvard could. I think we underestimate her at our peril.

    • I think that whether you think an Oral Roberts University degree is suspect or not may depend on how well you remember Oral Roberts and his antics.

Oh, I remember him very well. But my understanding is that ORU has become a fairly run-of-the-mill university, not shockingly substandard. Regent, on the other hand, is a joke.

It’s possible Bachmann isn’t as stupid as she sometimes seems to be, but she’s not exactly tethered to what we might call “reality.”
