The Trump Tax Return Saga

So this just happened

State prosecutors in Manhattan have subpoenaed President Trump’s accounting firm to demand eight years of his personal and corporate tax returns, according to several people with knowledge of the matter.

The subpoena opens a new front in a wide-ranging effort to obtain copies of the president’s tax returns, which Mr. Trump initially said he would make public during the 2016 campaign but has since refused to disclose.

The subpoena was issued by the Manhattan district attorney’s office late last month, soon after it opened a criminal investigationinto the role that the president and his family business played in hush-money payments made in the run-up to the election.  …

… The state prosecutors are seeking a range of tax documents from the accounting firm, Mazars USA, including Mr. Trump’s personal returns and those of his business, the Trump Organization. The subpoena seeks federal and state returns for both the president and the company dating back to 2011, the people said.

At least, William Barr can’t shut down state prosecutors. This tidbit is from TPM:

House Democrats have also subpoenaed Mazars for Trump financial records. Trump’s personal attorneys are fighting that subpoena in court and are awaiting an appeals court decision on the matter, after a federal judge upheld the subpoena.

I’m looking forward to further developments.

  1. I don't think Trump can hold back the flood of investigations forever. What's in Trump financial records that is so damning? I suspect that for all who aren't fully in the cult, the facts will be devastating. The thing is timing.

IMO. Trump hopes he can delay the release of tax returns until AFTER the election. The dam may not hold that long, and if the facts get out it might be post-primary-season and into the general. Debates. Interviews. Campaign Ads that feature Trump rubles. I think we're gonna see the worst possible info for Trump a the worst possible time for Trump.

If it is as bad as I think, Trump may try a blatant power grab to suppress what the courts authorize (or are about to authorize.)

OT – Check out what Liz posted on Medium today.

When some Berniebot tries to say Liz is a corporate stooge, I may forget I'm a pacifist. Bernie is a good man and a good candidate, but some of his supporters are liberal versions of Trump cultists.

  3. Why is it that I have a sneaking suspicion that Moscow Mitch's rush to pack the Fed courts is:

    1.  To protect tRUMP (and future greedy, corrupt and bigoted GOP president's).

    2.  To act as judicial speed-bumps (or STOP signs) when (if?) a Democrat is POTUS – and especially if said Dem has BOTH houses of Congress!

    Hmm…

To quote from the great Yul Brenner in "The King and I:"

     "Is, a puzzlement."

  4. The political system has been gamed so thoroughly.  Warren is smart to address what sorely needs to be done when this ,hopefully,  is over. Tax Returns, judges , I won't even try to list it all.

Personally  I want a right to vote  and have that vote counted amendment.

I also want an ERA passed at last.
