Another Death in Minneapolis

Border Patrol agents in Minneapolis shot and killed a man this morning. This is from Scripps News:

A man was fatally shot by a federal agent in Minneapolis on Saturday morning amid heightened tensions between the area’s immigrant community and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Star Tribune reported.

Witnesses told the Star Tribune that an ambulance crew performed CPR on the man. The newspaper reported that video footage showed agents wrestling the man to the ground before shooting him multiple times. The man’s condition is unknown.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara told the Star Tribune that the man has died.

I just spoke with the White House after another horrific shooting by federal agents this morning. Minnesota has had it. This is sickening.

The President must end this operation. Pull the thousands of violent, untrained officers out of Minnesota. Now.

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune is posting updates to the story with no paywall. The DHS is saying the man who was shot approached ICE agents with a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun. But a video clearly shows that the federal agents wrestled him to the ground before shooting him.

The video is in this clip from MS NOW. It’s hard to see details but the man clearly was on the ground before he was shot.

Comments by Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey

That’s as much as I know for now. I’ll update if I see more information.

Update: The New York Post is running a headline claiming the man who was shot was waving a gun at the federal agents. It’s odd, then, then the federal agents were able to wrestle the man to the ground and appear to have roughed him up before shooting him. Those dots are not connecting.

It’s being reported that the man who was killed was 37-year-old Alex Pretti, a local intensive care unit nurse at a VA hospital. DHS has released a photo of a handgun said to be one that Pretti was carrying. The clear implication is that if he was carrying a gun he must have been up to no good. I recall a fellow named Kyle Rittenhouse who was held to a different standard.  Per the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said that Pretti was a lawful gun owner with a permit. In Minnesota, open and concealed carry are legal with a permit. .

Update: The New York Times is reporting that Pretti was carrying a phone, not a firearm. They have a photo that clearly shows a phone in his hand.

Videos on social media that were verified by The New York Times appear to contradict the Department of Homeland Security’s account of the fatal shooting of Alex Jeffrey Pretti, 37, by federal agents in Minneapolis on Saturday morning.

The Department of Homeland Security said the episode began after a man “approached US Border Patrol officers with a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun” and they tried to disarm him. The statement did not specify whether the gun was in the man’s hands or merely on his body.

Footage shows Mr. Pretti was clearly holding a phone, not a gun, before the agents took him to the ground and shot him.

  1. The horror show continues.  Few words are needed.   Maureen Dowd penned these: The depth of his shallowness is infinite.  The antecedent for the pronoun him is obvious.  The he who need not be named.  The horrible him.

  2. "Another Death in Minneapolis"

Let me fix that for you "Another Execution in Minneapolis".

There are two other videos that I have seen that I'm having trouble linking. One shows the NAZI's pushing a woman to the ground and Alex trying to help her up before he is mobbed by the NAZI's and eventually shot eleven times. The other video linked shows one of the NAZI's disarming Alex and running away with his gun just before the other NAZI's shot him eleven times.

I did my best to stabilize the video, you can clearly see one agent disarm Alex before the other even draws his gun to execute him : r/Minneapolis

      • Both he had a phone and a gun. He had a gun in his back waist, he had a carry permit. You can see in the video once on the ground the fat NAZI in a grey coat takes the gun someone then yells gun and they execute him. This video linked was on reddit and slowed down so you could really see what happened, but many of the videos on reddit and youtube are being removed. MSNOW still has this, you can see the big fat NAZI run away with the gun just before the shooting begins.

  3. I watched the video from different angles.  This man was helping a woman who had been peppered sprayed, ICE jumped on him, about 6 agents, beat him and executed him with about 6+ shots. This was murder.
I have lived in this country for many years and never thought that to be a protestor  or just being there with protestors was a death sentence in the US.  This is no better than Iran.  My family and friends in France are asking me what is happening, why Americans are letting this happen? It is their country they say, they should do something. I don’t know what to answer.

  4. He was carrying a gun, legally permitted carry, in his waistband in back. He never "brandished" it and after they tackled him to the ground you can clearly see one agent remove it from  the guy's holster before they then executed him.  It's like they just want to kill people and the fact that he had a weapon he never took out was enough to allow them to get their kill jollies.

An execution plain and simple,  a flat out murder  in cold blood.  That those agents aren't immediately in custody is a travesty.  I'm tired of local police acting like they  have to keep  people away from agents rather than protecting people *from* the agents. It's sickening.

  5. I'm furious. The thing I'm certain of is a murder. Whether or not he had a gun seems uncertain. At no point in the video leading up to the murder does he seem to be 'brandishing' a weapon. The gang tackle approach is inconsistent with a gun threat, I think. Officers would get clear to allow others to fire.

I'm looking for evidence. Cops planting a gun on a suspect is an old trick. The photo of the weapon means nothing unless you can link it to the victim. And that would only prove he could have been (or was) carrying, which the local cops say he was legally allowed to do.

The First and Second Amendments do not mix well. I'm opposed to carrying weapons to a protest (or counterprotest). There's implicit intimidation in carrying a rifle to a protest in view of your political opponents. It's intended to squelch free speech.  If you carry a handgun, intending to protect people n a firefight, they have the advantage because they have body armor. Your only shot is a headshot from chin to forehead from the front. Everything else is protected to a large degree. If you try to intervene, your chances of survival are not good – and your chances of saving anyone else, not much better.

This is the second murder of a US citizen by Border Patrol/ICE. They have ZERO jurisdiction. Somebody has got to get the issue of ICE in front of a federal judge with the demand that ICE presence in MN be brought down to non-invasive numbers. What's the body count got to be before the courts say, "enough."

It looks like enough Democrats have found a spine to put funding for DHS in jeopardy next week.

  6. So, yes, the US of A is now a fully fascistic state. My opinion is that these events are  planned and purposeful in that the Federal Government is putting a divisive set of public policies in place knowing full well that it will create a dissent and that violence towards dissent can be a managed as performative tool to gain political advantage … to troll the people with Trump Derangement Syndrome and run the Fox News news cycle with those angry, terrorist hippies inconveniencing the silent majority proving themselves as the saviors of society. The Maga folks have insatiable blood-lust for tee vee gore and will crave more and more killing until there is a full police state where if you inform a street corner flat-foot that there was a woke guy in the gas station market saying that the gays are not that bad, there will be a billy club in order.

So, yes, the US of A is now a fully fascistic state. Are there any public policy paths that can regain the stability and freedoms of the old (dead) republic while avoiding the blood-bath that the Maga folks so desperately desire? … or do we have to wait for the point that the corruption, incompetence, and expense of the repression system implodes the dollar system? I'm betting that we are not even at the beginning of the hardship because the propaganda game that motivates the blood thirst is rock solid and divine word to a very powerful 1/3 of what used to be "our" country… and if there is a blue tsunami the GOP will be a-ok with this as they will get out their tried and true "opposition" playbook and wreck any hope of rebuilding a rules-based constitutional system.

Perhaps apologies are in order but it is cathartics and somewhat soothing to write out. The wife just put on "Dr. Strangelove." Good flick. Best wishes to you all.
