The Leading Embarrassment of the Free World

If we can’t impeach him, maybe we can lock him up in the White House basement until 2009 so he’s not trotting around the world making a fool of himself. Dear Leader upstaged again:

During a press conference today at the G8 summit in Russia, President Bush told President Vladimir Putin that Americans want Russia to develop a free press and free religion “like Iraq.” To laughter and applause, Putin responded: “We certainly would not want to have same kind of democracy as they have in Iraq, quite honestly.” CNN’s Ed Henry called it a “tough jab.”

The exchange underscores how the war in Iraq has damaged the standing of the United States, to the point where even modest encouragement for democratic reform is met with ridicule.

I can’t think of any time another head of state ridiculed the President of the United States to his face.

  1. I read bush’s reply to Putin was “just wait” ……….lol……you think we are getting ready to “turn another corner”?

  2. It’s embarrassing. Either he is sinking into dementia or his staff is afraid to tell him what’s really going on in Iraq. Or both.

This is no way to run a country.

  3. Putin’s insult to Bush pales in comparison to what David Mack just said over at MSNBC. They were talking about the Mid East flare-up and Mack declared the US AWOL. See my Angrybear post for a link to who David Mack is.

  4. The fact the President is giving the green light to the Isreali for the bombing of civilian targets in Lebanon is almost beyond belief. Not even the pretense of playing the role of honest broker.
He would be doing the Israelis a huge favor by intervening and stopping the slaughter. I have never felt so ashamed of my government.

  5. Laughter and Applause….one was directed at his stupidity and the other at his arrogance.. The old towel snapping fratboy caught one on the ass…GOOD!

    Hey!!!!Just wait!!!!!(snark)

When bush leaves this country and gets on the world stage I just cringe at what he is going to do.He reminds me of that one jackass who goes to the state fair, gets drunk, wets himself , and then proceeds to treat everyone to his words of wisdom(which always still seem to make more sense then bush ever has)…in these parts they call that actin’ like you’ve never been off the farm before…(which makes me afraid to go to a farm)…

He makes an ass out of himself everytime (thus making the nation look like a giant ass)..He makes us look weak and foolish…oh please God DON’T let him bring up that bleeping pig again!!!!!!!!!

  8. The entire trip has been a tremendous embarrasment, from all the juvenile remarks about slicing pigs (while the muslim world burns), riding his bike around St. Petersburg like he hasn’t a care in the world, and then this.

The guy can’t talk because he doesn’t think, and he doesn’t think because he doesn’t care. He has frequently been described as uncurious, but completely unconcerned about anything other than his own personal comfort level would be far more accurate.

  9. I was kinda hopin’ Putin would give the POTUS one of those belly kisses…..or at least a good dutch head rub, yuk, yuk.uk….

  10. Georgie Boy looked so immature and foolish, I was waiting for Putin to pull up his shirt and kiss him on his belly!
I’m Ukrainian and Russian, and I think our “leader” is the worst ever! And, I lived through Nixon!!! My parent’s disagree – they think Stalin was worse…
Well, they’re right on this one! But, given a few more years, it might be close!
No one, and I mean NO ONE, wants what Shrub is selling as far as Iraq.
How dim a bulb do we have as “Preznit?”
    Don’t answer that….

  12. The Russians don’t feel the need for public suggestions from others on how to run their country – any more than we would.

  13. Serves him right for bringing up Iraq at all. A man with a functioning sense of shame would be doing everything he could to avoid the subject of Iraq, and/or destabilizing the Middle East, as Israel is in a new two-front war. Instead, Bush brings it up like it was some kind of success story. My mind would boggle, if it hadn’t already.

Amb. Khalizad was on NPR saying that if we withdraw too soon, we run the risk of a failed state that could destabilize the region. With Saddam, things seemed sucky for Iraqis, but fairly stable regionally, and we didn’t have a $2 billion a week burn rate. We’re only better off in George’s fever dream.

  14. I am always glad when Bush visits foreign lands. Sure, he makes Americans look like imbeciles who chose a madman to be king. Is it not true? Sure, he is a dangerous, dangerous fool. But it seems that only abroad is he ever exposed to the ridicule and disdain he deserves.

In the U.S.A. his bubble protects him and his cabal (including his wife) from any exposure to dissent or reality. His lackeys in the U.S. press corps wear out their knees with 24/7 genuflecting. They rehearse their faux laughter more than they rehearse the non-questions they prepare for non-answer responses.

But in Europe, Asia, etc. most of the people, the press, and even a good number of the politicians recognize him for the boastful, ignorant wretch that he is. I like to imagine that even he occasionally sees the contempt in their eyes.

So, by all means, travel, King George, travel! For the world has not thoroughly enough learned the lesson that any country, with too much power and too little external restraint, regardless of its fine traditions and constitution, can turn overnight to threaten all.

  15. This is so embarrassing.. can someone PLEASE at least give him laryngitis for a day?

  16. Actually what you are missing is that Putin made an even bigger ass of himself than Bush, because up until this moment Bush was such a total waste of space that he was the only leader in the free world standing beside Putin as a pal after “looking into his eyes.” Now this man comes to Putin’s home city and just because he doesn’t give Putin everything Putin wants on a silver platter Putin attacks him. Classic self-destructive Russian.

  17. To poster 17:
Putin should have followed up his barb with ” Hey,Pull my finger” after the POTUS said “Just wait”.
‘Sounds like you’ve lost that lovin’ feelin’, La Russophobe….

  18. Bush is going to be so pissed when Karl tells him that everyone was laughing at him – not with him.
