Turning Tides

I do like this kind of talk — “Obama Positioned to Quickly Reverse Bush Actions.” Has a catchy ring to it, huh?

See also “Harsh Words About Obama? Never Mind Now.” Is it too harsh to say that Joe Lieberman is a douche?

The headline that most got my attention this morning is “Sarah Palin blamed by the US Secret Service over death threats against Barack Obama.”

The head is not entirely accurate. The Secret Service did not issue a statement blaming Sarah Palin for anything; the Secret Service doesn’t do that. They are an obsessively tight-lipped crew. The article is, essentially, a rewrite of Chapter 6 of the Newsweek special feature on the campaign that you should read if you can find the time. If you want to read just the “death threats” part, start on page 4, beginning with the second paragraph, which begins Palin skillfully handled her debate, then keep reading through page 5, seventh paragraph, which ends “OK, buddy, but remember—that goes both ways.”)

The cause-and-effect between Palin’s rhetoric and the spike in threats against Obama is unmistakable. But the Secret Service didn’t point it out publicly.

  1. Palin incited hatred and division. She went further than even the dirtiest partisan politics permitted. Of course McCain and the Republican Party allowed and probably encouraged her to do this. We, the American people, could see what was going on at her rallies on live TV and on video. It was there for the world to see. ***** I doubt that the Secret Service has any official public opinion…but I do believe they are more than happy to allow “leaks” to reach the American people. ********** For Palin and Company…you reap what you sow!

  2. I’m gonna fly my flag this coming veteran’s day..That’s if the moths haven’t eaten it. It hasn’t seen to much sunshine since Bush destroyed my pride in America. I know it’s silly to have an emotional attachment to a piece of cloth, but it represents my values. I can’t take pride in torturing, or kidnapping, or the wholesale slaughter of innocent people. I’m also not a big fan of lying to, and spying on my fellow countrymen either.

And if there was a just God, or any real God — Cheney would be decomposing( moldering like John Brown) right now, and Guiliani would have undergone a court ordered chemical castrastion.

  3. I was thinking about the ‘Sarah Palin blamed for death threats’ headline. It occurred to me that if after Jan 20 Bush invites Obama to be the guest of honor at a parade in Dallas.. he should pass.

  4. Sunday Night Revery

I’m beginning to think that Obama really will bring us a new government experience, just looking at how quickly he is getting it organized and how he is establishing himself without either buying into or superseding the administration Bush will have for the next 70 or so days. On the day he is sworn in, watch for a fast realignment of policy… my guess is that a lot of executive orders will be revised or overturned in the first forty-eight hours.

On the TV news programs today I saw Rahm Emanuel and John Podesta, each who made it clear that Obama has a transfer program in play (Podesta said they really began last August) that should be ready to run immediately.

While at least two panels of Republicans on various Fox shows today tried to show that there was No Mandate, despite the number of votes and number of states, and that we are still a Center-Right country. I got to see at least two other panels of Democrats saying how we were now a Center-Left country.

I’d like to think we could get off the left and right crap and just fix the mess we’re in.

  5. This is a video, made before the debates, of someone who reads faces professionally:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LOngCQIvapM

In it, she states that Obama is visionary, and surround himself with good people and would be a good leader, but he has impatience – “someone who drives fast, thinks fast, and they move fast”.

  6. “someone who reads faces professionally”…

Prolly got a PhD in face-reading from Harvard…Or at least Columbia…

What the hell is this world coming to?

  7. I do like this kind of talk — “Obama Positioned to Quickly Reverse Bush Actions.” Has a catchy ring to it, huh?

Does it ever. I’m hoping one part of that is an exhaustive, detailed and very public reading of exactly what those actions are, because I believe that a large fraction of Americans have no idea just why Bush is so awful. I’m hoping Obama is going to be very up-front about just what kind of shape the country’s in and exactly how it got there.

You know, sort of like how when you rent a car you do a walk-around to see the dents and scrapes it already has, and report them to the rental agency, so you don’t get blamed for them. Of course the hard-denialist righties will blame everything on Obama anyway, but listing all the nastiness at the start of his term will make it harder for that to stick with the public.

  8. Maybe Regent University will have to cancel it’s Senior Management placement program with the Justice Department. Just think…If you can speak in tongues, or recite without hesitation 7 of the 10 commandments, and you love the Lord — then you’re qualified for a top slot in the United States Justice Department.

  9. In today’s International Herald Tribune there is a long AP article on Obama’s plans to bring a large number of prisoners to the States for trial… part of his campaign promise to close Guantanamo.

“Under plans being put together in Obama’s camp, some detainees would be released and many others would be prosecuted in U.S. criminal courts.”

McCain had also promised to close Guantanamo, but wanted to stick with Bush’s military tribunals and not go near criminal courts. Obama’s plans are quite fr removed from those of the current administration.
