While I Was Out

I’ve been out all day. When I left this morning, there were conflicting news stories about whether the radiation dangers in Japan were getting better or worse. But now I’m back … and there are conflicting news stories about whether the radiation dangers in Japan are getting better or worse.

Part of the problem seems to be a language barrier, but not necessarily the barrier between Japanese and English. I’m suspecting a lot of general assignment reporters are tossing out words like “meltdown” and “fail” without knowing precisely what they mean, technically.

And now for the good news — Madison Rally Bigger Than Biggest Tea Party Rally Not that news media noticed.

Here’s a big shout out to Buckyblue and Ordinary Jill for standing with the real patriotis in Madison this weekend.

  1. Thanks Maha, there was no news outlets there. And the stories that did run used clips from the day the Budget Repaired Repair Bill was stealthily signed by the state Senate, when people were climbing in windows and banging on the capitol doors to be let in. ABC used words like riots and out of control, because that makes much better news than, you know, telling the truth. That has been my biggest eye opener, watching how news outlets manipulate and tell the story they want, and this isn’t even Fox. The effort is now to recall some of the state senators who are most vulnerable, and there are quite a few. So instead of going to Madison and eating at the Great Dane, I’m walking streets and pounding on doors. The hard parts of democracy.

  2. buckyblue,
    Keep pounding!
    And, again, thank you.
The MSM in this country is useless. And now, you’re old news – YAWN!!!
And the MSM looooooves them some meltdowns. Now, they’re worried about Japan.
I have a better, slightly safer idea – maybe if you folks in WI could kidnap Charlie Sheen, they’ put you TV again.

    • maybe if you folks in WI could kidnap Charlie Sheen, they’ put you TV again.

And if you could keep him off TV for awhile, a grateful nation will thank you.

  3. People I trust have suggested that the situation is such that, if the core melts down, it will be contained and mean a huge, huge cleanup bill.

Now, there’s one thing that bothers me – if the situation were such that they needed an *immediate* and *orderly* evacuation *as soon as possible*, they’d say “everything’s fine.” Because panic won’t help. And if the situation was such that an immediate, orderly evacuation is a good safety precaution, they’d say “everything’s fine.” So, we can’t trust the official word to be the ultimate truth.

But… from what I’ve seen about the design of the reactors, it sounds like the system worked, and the damage is more about how horrible it’s going to be to replace those reactors, not what’s going to happen to the people. I hope so.
