  1. “Day dream Believer”
I Love that song, it reminds me of my wife and I.She’s the “home coming queen”, I’m the “day dream believer”.I hope that never changes.
I was in the 7th grade when the Monkees hit the scene, so sad to hear of Jones’s passing.
    CRAP!!!
I did some work down in Indian Town several years ago, it’s in Palm Beach County, but inland; I saw one of the worst slums I’ve ever seen in the U.S. there.
It was like a third world scene.

  2. I’ll just repost my comment, since maha’s now posted about his death.

    RIP Davy.

I do have to admit though, that The Monkees were my gateway band to harder R&R.

From the Monkees, it wasn’t too big a leap for me go to Jimi Hendrix, MC5, and The Who.

Then, I found myself main-lining The Ramones and Richard Hell and the Voidoids, snorting The Sex Pistols, and chasing The Dead Kennedy’s with Nina Hagen and The Jam.

Luckily, the music in the 80′s became less pure because it was cut with some nasty pop sh*t and pretty thin “Hair Band” music, so it was easy to quit that whole scene.

And to think, it all started with “Take the Last Train to Clarksville…”

Btw – I’m still “jonesin'” for R&R music from the early 60’s to the mid 80’s.
We’ll never hear the likes of that again…

  3. Oops, Indiantown is in Martin county, just north of Palm Beach County.
Both countys have third world type slums inland (Belle Glade, IndianTown), and otherworld luxury along the coast.

  4. Feel old?!
Yikes, after reading gulag’s gateway confessions, I hate to confess that back then I was too hip and sophisticated to try to enjoy a “fake television” band. But I did secretly love the sound.

    This is indeed sad news.

    • Yeah, they were a fake television band, but somehow they were better than the sum of their parts. I liked “I’m a Believer” too.

  5. A friend talked me into attending one of the reunion tours — this concert was on a Hudson River pier. She was a real big fan and I was so-so. But I have to say, it was a nice evening and they played well. I was glad to have gone. Goddess, yes, I feel old too. (My favorite was Mike Nesmith.)

  6. Stella,
Despite loving hard R&R (especially the British Invasion), Punk, and New Wave – and the earliest forms of Rap, too (urban protest and poetry music, before it became misogynistic and uber-violent) – I always had a special place in my heart for The Eagles and Abba.
The Eagles ain’t so bad to admit to – but Abba?
    Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh… Don’t tell anyone………………………..

  7. I wish Davy had gotten to be a colorful old man, 66 is too young.

I first saw them as “Los Monkees” on “su canal quatro, en WAPA color” via WAPA TV out of San Juan, Puerto Rico. My Spanish wasn’t that good, but for some reason, I got a kick out of the show. They were a memorable part of the times and a sign of “the shape of things to come”.

I saw a couple of reruns after we moved back to the mainland, but I always thought they were better in Spanish, just like “Los Picapiedras”.

  8. Thanks, Maha, I loved Daydream Believer. I’m not so sure about how I feel as I am also 66 and glad I am not dead. Michael Nesmith’s mother invented White-Out, the best friend of a secretary in those days. RIP Davy.

  9. erinyes…I remember hearing that Belle Glade was or is the aids Capitol of the United States.
