Dem Convention Day One

I’m going to do a little live blogging. Is it me, or are the Dems a lot more fired up than the Republicans were?

Deval Patrick — Wow. Great speech. It’s a shame he was on before 10 o’clock eastern when the networks begin broadcasting. I’ll have to post a video as soon as there is one. I’m sorry I missed Ted Strickland. I’ll find a video of that, too.

Wait — here it is —

Update: Mayor Julian Castro is doing pretty well, I think.

Update: Michelle Obama’s speech was, as always, very real.

Tomorrow — the Big Dog.

  1. I started watching the Cspan livestream about 8 PM (EST). So I heard Strickland, O’Malley, Patrick, Castro, Michelle O and all the others. The delegates were pumped. They were enthusiastic. They were rip-roaring and wearing all sorts of silly patriotic garb. BUT, FSM, are the Democrats diverse and mixed and all sitting together in one big sea of colors and flavors. It was a gorgeous mosaic.

  2. I got a little teary eyed when Zoe’ mother spoke.I could identify with the pain of a parents fears and feelings of desperation in having a sick child, and not being able to provide the help they need due to lack of money.

When Lily Ledbetter spoke the tears flowed to the edge of my jaw. I tried to analyze the emotional trigger. I didn’t notice any quavering in her voice, but the twang of her accent, the power of her spirit and message just knocked me over..I guess the power of sincerity mixed with an indomitable spirit just tore down my defenses not to be played. I was truely moved.

  3. FOUR MORE YEARS!

    And after Barack:
    Michelle- EIGHT MORE YEARS!!!

I wasn’t planning on watching, but my Mom was watching (she LOVES the President – she calls me her third son – after Barack Obama and Bill Clinton. And she LOVES her some Michelle!) and I wanted to watch with her, since my late father was almost as big a political junkie as I am, and I got hooked.
And from Sebelius, to Duckworth, to Michelle, it was one terrific, on point, speech after another.

And I loved Patrick’s whole speech, it was GREAT – especially about Liberals growing a spine.

Poor O’Malley – if you took who was around him out of the picture, his speech was very good – and he was having fun up there! And having been an actor, I know what it’s like to be the person trying to follow an amazing audition – it’s tough, and can be very dispiriting. And yet you “soldier-on.” And O’Malley put on a smile, and gave a fine performance himself.

And Castro’s speech was terrific, especially when he got to health care and Romney – I LOL’d. And what a smile!

But Michelle… What can I say about Michelle? EIGHT MORE YEARS!

And thanks for the link, maha, because I missed Strickland’s speech. I’m going to take a look at it now.

  4. Great line by Strickland – if Mitt was Santa Claus, he’d fire the elves, and outsource the reindeer!

  5. I liked Michelle’s line about walking through the door of opportuinty and reaching back to hold the door open for others.

  6. Indeed, there were many Great Lines of the night. The Santa comparison was one; I loved Michelle’s “Being president doesn’t change who you are, it reveals who you are.”

Deval Patrick and Julian Castro, both riveting. I too found myself wishing Gov. Patrick had appeared in the last hour, so more people could hear him.

And man, I would not mess with Ms. Ledbetter. Talk about yer steel magnolias. What a heroine!

Speaking of, someone suggested that if the Dems wanted to parallel/parody The Old Man and the Seat, they should get Betty White out there. It’s fun to imagine, anyway. Her prop could be an empty suit on a hanger.

  7. In denfense of Mitt.. He did give all his grand children a few million bucks apiece. Not a bad attempt at trying to express love even though it won’t really satisfy a child’s true need. Spending time and giving attention to a child pays a higher dividend. But like they say…You can’t give what you don’t have.

  8. Well, of course there were omissions, that stands to reason, but I couldn’t find any lies.. How can the Dem’s have a convention without an equal amount lies? Seems to me they’ve put themselves at a great disavantage.
