  1. Somehow, I just haven’t been able to get into the George Zimmerman case (too much of a big picture guy). OT, and some hope: A Liberal Dixie? What You May Not Know About the Changing South:

…When Americans talk about the South, they tend to be talking about the past…

…Southern politics has never been quite so uncomplicated as that. It took decades for Republicans to outnumber Democrats, and Republican control of the region has never matched the Democrats’ former hegemony. The South has been contested ground for 40 years, with the GOP dominating federal elections and gradually cutting into the Democrats’ hold on state and local offices—culminating in 2012…

…Over the next two decades, it will become clear to even the most clueless Yankee that the Solid South is long gone. The politics of the region’s five most populous states—Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and Texas—will be defined by the emerging majority that gave Obama his winning margins [in 2008]. The under-30 voters in these states are ethnically diverse, they lean heavily Democratic, and they are just beginning to vote…

  2. I refuse to watch the news today, until AFTER the verdict.

The imbecile TV reporters will speculate about any and every thing – including who ordered the Moo Goo Gai Pan, who had the Pu-Pu Platter, and who had the Vegetarian Moo Shu, and what the fortune cookies said.

  3. It’s getting to be a nail biter to see if Zimmy gets away with murder. If he is convicted he’ll be able to console himself in the fact that it’s all in God’s plan. I hope he’s spending this weekend storing up on his conjugal delights because the well is about to dry. Well, maybe not.. I hear that Bubba’s got an appetite for the Rubenesque.

  4. I tried to listen carefully to the defense closing argument, but found myself watching the clock to gauge the extent of my tolerance for relentless mansplaining. I made it to 24 minutes, thinking that assumptions about other people was a really good theme for this trial.

Excuse me while I assume that the ladies of the jury noticed Mr. O’Mara’s contempt for their intelligence. I have a lot of confidence in it.

  5. The Orlando area is pretty diverse.I’ve lived here since ’89, and it has changed quite a bit since then. The “bedroom” communities north of the city tend to be affluent and largely Republican. There is also a significant liberal / artist, and LGBT community in the city. Kissimmee was once cowboy country, but is now mostly working class hispanics predom Puerto Rican and Dominicans who voted heavily for Obama. The solid “red” areas are in the vast interior, which is NOT densely populated, and the military / Bible belt panhandle. Broward (Ft.Lauderdale) and Miami Dade are mostly blue.
That said, Florida is not Mississippi or Alabama, but it is in the South.

  6. If you’re black you might as well not show up on the street unless you want to draw the heat.–Bob Dylan from Hurricane

  7. Ditto Bob Dylan. I’ve been trying to find info on Zimmerman’s jurors. All women, five white and one black or hispanic, according to this article.

  8. I just woke up, turned on my laptop, saw the verdict, and am sick.

The phat phuck got away with it.

    I can’t say I’m surprised.

    And how sad is that?

    How sad is that…

  9. And I also found out that John Cole’s beloved cat, Tunch, was killed yesterday.

This is NOT shaping up as a good Sunday at all…

  10. Not what I wanted, but the jury decided.
Perhaps we can concentrate on the misleaders who made us go to war in Eye-Rak that killed hundreds of thousands.THAT would be one HELL of a trial.

  11. @ Lynne: “I am in shock. I really didn’t think things would turn out this way.”

It is infathomable, inconceivable how stupid the jury was. If Zimmerman had taken 5 shots of everclear and run over Martin while DUI, then–maybe then, they MIGHT have recognized manslaughter when it was staring them in the face. Or maybe not. I bet if Martin had pulled out a gun when Zimmerman aimed his, and shot 1st, am I wrong to suspect Martin would have ended up in the klink?

  12. Had a chat with a retired policeman the other night. He felt Zimmerman was being railroaded on manslaughter! He quoted all sorts of “evidence” he must have heard from the voices in his head, or talk radio, that was never presented in trial. He heard none of my objections, either. I cut it short and realized that proof and belief are pretty much mutually exclusive at some intersections. Clearly, Martin’s choice to be black did not help him, either. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

  13. Zimmy was all stone faced during the whole trial, they could have put his face on Mount Rushmore considering how fixed it was. The only display of emotion was when he winced as the prosecutor called him a wannbe cop. Poor Georgie got his armor pierced.
The truth will set you free, but it can also haunt you to your grave. Good luck in your Christian walk, Georgie.
