Baby Men

This morning we woke up to the news that the G6 leaders (baby-man Donald Trump being absent from the climate change meeting, apparently sulking, which was for the best) pledged 22 million dollars to fight the Amazon rainforest fires that threaten life on this planet. And the baby-man Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro turned it down unless French President Emmanuel Macron apologizes to him.

Bolsonaro and Macron have engaged in a days-long spat after the French leader used the G-7 summit this week to call for action to protect the Amazon and said the fires are a world environmental crisis that Bolsonaro has allowed to worsen. He also said that Bolsonaro, a climate change skeptic, had lied about his effort to combat deforestation.

Bolsonaro responded angrily, saying Macron had insulted him and was trying to undermine Brazil’s sovereignty by intervening in the Amazon.

If the fires are not brought under control very soon, I personally think the rest of the world would be justified in moving in to do the job whether Brazil likes it or not. If baby-man Bolsonaro doesn’t like that, I’m sure somebody’s got some black ops commandos available  who could persuade him to shut up. I’m serious. And that’s not something I suggest lightly, but the consequences of inaction could be beyond catastrophic.

President Trump came to Bolsonaro’s defense on Tuesday, saying via Twitter, “He is working very hard on the Amazon fires and in all respects doing a great job for the people of Brazil — Not easy.”

In reply, Bolsonaro thanked Trump and wrote, “The fake news campaign built against our sovereignty will not work.”

Of course, these two baby-men see eye to eye. Baby-man Bolsonaro also has been making crude and juvenile remarks about Michelle Macron, the French president’s wife. How Trumpish of him! Naomi Klein remarked,

Just your morning reminder that disdain for women’s bodies and disdain for the earth are deeply connected. Both remind idiotic baby men like Bolsonaro and Trump that they are part of web of interdependent life and not the lone heroic figures pretend to be.

Whether women’s bodies or the earth remind the baby-men of anything useful is questionable, but I agree that such disdain seems to be part of the baby-man syndrome.

  1. The fires were set deliberately at the orders of landowners who do not profit from supplying humanity with oxygen. There is money to be made by planting groves for palm oil. That seems to be the principal role for lands converted from equatorial rain forests to 'productive' use. The only commercial response is a boycott of products from equatorial countries engaged in conversion of rain forests to… anything. Whether countries are due compensation for preservation of the lungs of the world, I'm not sure but I'm opposed to paying the landowners, The loss by residents who must accept a less developed economy might be just.

Trump is always going to be a cheerleader for the rape of poor women or the unprotected resources of the planet. It's the same thing – Naomi hit it on the head there. The exposed nerve for the fat cats seems to be boycotts.  Israel is indifferent to the world protesting the abuse of Palestinians but the mere discussion of economic reprisals has them in a tizzy. That's where Brazil is vulnerable, IMO, if the world even starts to organize.

  2. Is it me, or are all of these (faux) tough-guy tyrannical Fascist leaders really whiny-ass-titty baby snowflakes?

We've seen tRUMP – Putin's Bitch – up close and personal – much closer than we ever wanted to.

When he's upset, NK's "Kim Yucky-uno" executes his relatives and military leaders in spectacular and horrifically cruel ways.  He starves his citizens, and keeps a good chunk of them in concentration camps!  The only people who get more than starvation diets, are the military personnel.  Oh, and there is no free press.

tRUMP's "Daddy," Vlad Putin, kills his enemies via poison – and not just in Russia.  He also suppresses the press, and arranges death's for the most inquiring of them – purely "accidental" death's, of course!

The list of these Fascistic tyrants is long.  You know the list at least as well as I do.h

Their MO's for maintaining control vary – but, as with tRUMP's and Miller's immigration policies (among others), "the cruelty IS the point!"

And the ones who inflict the cruelty are weak, insecure, and frightened men – if you want to call them men, and not what they really are:  monsters.

Monsters, the whole lot of them!!

  3. Looks like the PM of England, a Trump-buddy is asking the Queen to suspend Parlament so he can ram through Brexit.  It doesn't seem likely to me that the Queen will agree, though I'm no expert in British politics. It does seem likely that the ploy will give Trump advisors (Stephen Miller) ideas – how the ideas will manifest remains to be seen.  The reaction to the move in England has had the effect of uniting the left and right in England against the PM. I suspect he won't last long – hope he didn't spend too much on drapes for Number 10 Downing though it may be convenient to move out before he's unpacked.

  4. Maybe the idea we aren't part of nature but instead magical beings created by an even more magical being has outlived its usefulness. Not that we can blame everything on that. Some people are just pigs:

That would be disastrous. Law and order would break down, people would fight back, instability may become regional, and there would be no way to control the flood of arsonists into the Amazon. Any change has to come from the Brazilian people. That doesn't mean there shouldn't be international pressure or inducements.

  6. The concept of yin/yang in Chinese philosophy is that if there is not balance, there will be collapse.  Nature's proper balance is that yang yields to yin at the appropriate time and vice versa.  We see this in day/night, summer/winter, activity/rest etc.  Everything in nature is attuned to this rhythm and it works very well.  However, humans are  the only species on earth that can and do deliberately interrupt this rhythm due to ignorance and hubris. When this happens, nature attempts to restore balance.  Nature will win even if the human race has to become extinct.
