A Brilliant Plot Twist

If we were all living inside a novel, this is the exact moment a savvy author would give Trump the virus. The timing couldn’t be better. Here’s the latest:

White House chief of staff Mark Meadows told reporters that the president was experiencing “mild symptoms,” but remained in “good spirits and very energetic.”

The president is expected to conduct official and political events from the residence — including a call Friday with senior citizens about the coronavirus.

The diagnosis is a jolt for the country’s leadership and had some advisers early Friday discussing the continuity of government should the president’s condition grow worse. Vice President Pence tested negative for the virus Friday morning, a spokesman said.

Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel tested positive for the virus Wednesday but didn’t reveal her diagnosis until after Trump announced he had the virus. McDaniel was last with Trump a week ago at a Sept. 25 fundraiser.

The announcement of Trump’s infection was soon followed by a torrent of speculation that he is faking covid to get out of the next debate. I doubt that, because the next debate is a couple of weeks off yet. Also, too:

More sage posters, like author and self-described conspiracy-theory debunker Mike Rothschild offered this: “The galaxy brain take is that Trump is faking COVID to get out of the debates or distract from the tax stuff. But his image depends on being a bull god street fighter Adonis who outworks men half his age. He wouldn’t pretend to be sick and weak. If anything, he’d cover it up.”

Indeed, yesterday before the announcement Scott Lemieux of Lawyers, Guns and Money speculated that Trump already was infected and was covering it up. .

Philip Bump at WaPo also speculates that if the news of Hope Hicks’s infection hadn’t been leaked, would we have learned about Trump?

One has to wonder what would have happened had Bloomberg News not uncovered Hicks’s positive test, which was conducted Thursday morning. The president continued his schedule as normal despite her diagnosis — and despite perhaps not feeling 100 percent himself, according to Bloomberg’s Jennifer Jacobs. That included a closed-door fundraiser at Trump’s private club in New Jersey on Thursday. Business as usual, as best he could.

If the Hicks diagnosis hadn’t become public, when, if ever, would we have learned about Trump’s?

Bump reminds us of all the times the Trump and his people have issued obviously phony reports of his robust good health, so if Meadows says he’s experiencing “mild symptoms” he’s probably not doing well at all.

Now, let me say now that I don’t want him to die. I want him to lose. I want him indicted and convicted. I want him wrung out to dry by the legal system. Death at this point is too good for him.

    Amen, sister…

  2. I don't have a great deal of confidence that Trump is lying but I don't have any confidence Trump is telling the truth. If it is true and Trump's schedule is curtailed, he's alone in the East Wing, with everyone avoiding him. With his phone. And time on his hands. What could possibly go wrong?

There's a paranoid twist to this twist. If the GOP hierarchy has decided to 'impeach' Trump, this is how they'd do it. Why impeachment now? Because Trump will drag down the ticket. SO they decide that Trump's symptoms are too severe and Pence takes over as acting POTUS (whether Trump approves or not.) This will show up when/if the 25th Amendment is invoked.

But Trump himself announced the diagnosis. Yes. If Meadows and others convinced Trump it's a brilliant way to play the virus to Trump's benefit (since they haven't been able to sell the public that it's going away, and a vaccine isn't going to be available in November.) SO true or not, Trump got suckered into this plot twist, not knowing the GOP Senators (Et tu, Mitch?) are trying to save their majority and their individual hides. My guess is that Trump's Tuesday performance is polling internally as convincing independent voters to sit this election out. Negative coattails.

      • ELVIS LIVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  My aunt died but Elvis was her life.  A bit of Elvis died when she did . Even an icon like Elvis dies a bit when the fan base dies.  Only Trump does not have that quality of fan base.  His base is very base, and like would even his base want to watch reruns of his recent debate?

Elvis was the bridge that let white people know the glory that is the blues.  And the blues begat Rock and Roll.  He will live beyond infamy.

Pardon the rant.  I just felt like a rant.

    • It wasn't _just_ sharing pictures.  It was denigrating employees and aides.  She treated surrounding people like slaves, even to placing them in situations more like slavery.  Try reading more.

    • Kimmie is a real piece of work.  Clearly has nose for power, she was married to Gavin Newsom, governor of CA (she was raised in CA).

  3. Am I a bad person because I do want him to die?  And to pass the plague along to Barr, McConnell, and Pence before he goes?

    • A *bad* person? In my opinion, no, but honestly, everyone deserves certain levels of compassion.

Framing can help. I won't be feeling sympathy if he dies the way I'd feel sympathy for a front-line person, or even a grocery/meatpacking worker. They didn't make things actively worse – they just tried to get along.

And I can't help but say that it's certainly ironic, and not unjust, that he's sick, and may die. But in the end, I know that there are certain despicable people who'd say it's okay if I die, because I'm a liberal, and if I said it's *good* if Trump dies, those people couldn't turn my stomach quite so horribly. To condemn hatred, and it's far more damaging cousin, indifference, I can't let myself fall prey to either.

So I wouldn't scold you for feeling that way, but, obviously, I might talk about other options :-).

  4. If this is hoax, which I am beginning to doubt given the news that’s come out since, it would fit right in with the everything Trump touches turns to crap meme, because this has put a focus back on the pandemic with devastating clarity.  And in a way that emphasizes Trump's incompetence and continuous reliance on Wile E Coyote type political schemes that blow up in his face, causing damage either to American prestige and/or its citizens.  What could be more delicious: Trump in the debate mocked Biden for wearing a mask, only to get sick himself from the disease shortly thereafter.  And he looks like an absolute fool having gone around all these months, downplaying the virus, mocking mask wearing and social distancing, and now the white house itself is a hotspot.  So much so that even the Barrett confirmation before the election is in jeopardy.

While I feel for the plight of anyone with this virus, including Trump, its hard when 205,000 people died from something he insisted was a "hoax." People to this day he's shown little concern for, since to do so would, in his "mind" get in the way of his reelection, and continued to publicly denigrate and mock as "weak" those who advised precautions, and even those with the virus.  He urged on his followers to be "tough guys" versus the "weak" democrats and show them by not wearing masks, and could give a rat's behind as some of them died for the cause.  Herman Cain, for starters.  Literally tens of thousands of lives could have been saved, its been estimated, had we had a leader who didn't do that and instead promoted mask wearing and social distancing, and took the virus seriously.  And zero remorse for the lives lost.  Yeah, its real hard to have any sympathy for him and those around him.

    • They know he'll spend a few days because he's getting remdesivir, which takes a few days of IV administration.

(Not that I could fault your skepticism – but in this case, there's an explanation.)

  5. Let.me just say this:

A large part of me hopes that Covid-19 has better aim and does a much more complete job than John Hinkley.

But don't get too enthusiastic, because in maha's next post (chronologically) I briefly explain why tRUMP's death might be bad for Democrats.

  6. 'Please pray for my dad': Eric Trump says his father is 'a true warrior' and Ivanka vows 'you will beat this' as President is taken to Walter Reed

Yeah, and when you're at it, pray for the thousands of mother's who were separated from their children never to see the again because of Trump's inhumane family separation policy.

You know, Eric. I prayed for your dad and my prayer has been answered. Not to the full extent of my appeals to God as of yet, but hopefully before he gets delivered up to the warn embrace of Satan he'll get to experience and understand just a portion of the pain and suffering he has injected into the lives of so many people. He seems incapable of being humbled so I hope this coronavirus experience for him is such a hell of a ride that it provides the maximum opportunity for him to attain humility.
