Trump Admits He Intended to Overturn Election

That thumping sound you hear comes from Trump’s lawyers banging their heads on walls.

Aaron Blake writes at WaPo,

Trump released a statement Sunday night asserting not only that Pence could have overturned the election himself but that he should have. The former president did so in the context of some Republicans pushing for a law that would clarify that the vice president doesn’t, in fact, have this power.

Citing Sen. Susan Collins’s (R-Maine) support for the push to overhaul the Electoral Count Act, Trump maintained the effort itself betrayed Pence’s actual authority.

“Actually, what they are saying is that Mike Pence did have the right to change the outcome, and they now want to take that right away,” Trump said. “Unfortunately, he didn’t exercise that power, he could have overturned the Election!”

I  believe this is the statement, with highlights added.

Aaron Blake goes on to cite all the people in Trump’s inner circle who said, yeah, this idea about Pence changing the outcome was floating around, but we all knew it was crazy. Nobody took it seriously.

Well, it looks like somebody took it seriously. Blake continues,

Trump, of course, has made little secret that he saw this as a viable path. He floated both options as late as Jan. 5, 2021, saying Pence could “also decertify the illegal and corrupt results and send them to the House of Representatives for the one-vote-for-one-state tabulation.”

He’s now reasserting, more than a year later, that that’s the path Pence should have indeed pursued. He’s advocated something so anti-democratic that his own lawyers and vice president have said it was illegal, “crazy” and “un-American.” That could certainly bear on both the Jan. 6 investigation — in that it reinforces Trump’s true motive — and the Electoral Count Act overhaul effort — in that it actually reinforces the need to clarify this.

But more than anything, it renders Republican efforts to suggest this was anything other than an attempted self-coup rather silly. And it also renders any suggestions that he wouldn’t try this kind of thing again even sillier.

Yes, very silly.

  1. So in 2024, Kamila Harris can throw out the states where she fervently believes there was voter suppression, and give the election to Joe Biden.

    • That and I will have my slate of alternative electors vote for the Democratic candidate here in the bloody red Mississippi of the Midwest (aka Indiana).

  2. Trump’s Confession to Coup Plot Should Trigger the 14th Amendment, Barring Him From Holding Office

Section 3 of the 14th Amendment:

“No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice-President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof.”

  3. Oh, if it was only thus:  Silly.

    Silly, it ain't.

    More like, "existential."

tRUMP and tRUMPism are existential threats to our form of representative democracy.

Like George Conway – husband of Mrs. Kellyanne "Alternative Facts" Conway (AKA: tRUMP's brain) – I wonder why no one is reading ex-POTUS, I. Otto B. N. Djale his "Miranda Rights" right now?

Right now, what we should be seeing on every single TV show, is a video of tRUMP being read his right's as he's being arrested!

tRUMP, literally, called called for violence.  He said if things went badly for him and his fellow January 6th seditionists, he hoped there would be protests similar to the one on that day all around the country.  That folks, at least
to me, is calling for violence.

And yet, Maine's Sen. Collins, that noted profile in courage, couldn't guarantee that she wouldn't vote for tRUMP.

Senator Collins is one of many, many cowards in the Republican Party.  Too many.

  4. The insurrection of the dumb continues this day.

Five HBCU's locked down following bomb and threats of violence. Police in Florida have already linked the threats to american nazis.

How do they know this? The "fine people", as American terrorist "Do Fat" called them were hanging out on an overpass on I4 in Orlando, and held rallies in other locations in Central Florida. While American Nazis hardly receive a second glance, their rhetoric was even more vile and disgusting than usual. They also seemed to know about the colleges as the lockdowns were happening and spoke about the traitor Susan Collins (?)., and the changes coming that will result in the "Rache Waffe" against those who are not American in their tiny little minds.

Full Disclosure: I am typing this as I watch and listen to news reports. Facts may be unverified and censored. as more information comes out or vanishes in the wind.

    Anyway, the insurrection continues.

  5. When they conduct the public J6 committee hearing I hope they class it up with a Hollywood type of introduction at the beginning of each segment. Something that has a stately looking narrator who highlights the crimes to be uncovered in each phase of the investigation. Of course, some music to accompany the opening of each segment of the investigation. Like this, Masterpiece Theatre Intro – YouTube

    • I kind of favor Jack Palance describing the setup, and closing with "Believe it or not"

Or maybe Rod Serling, introducing this week's Twilight Zone.

  6. Well, that's all in the past…we need to let that go…what we need to focus on today… is the normal Republican retort to statements about 1/6.  I guess the Donald did not get the message.  He is the self-appointed historian on 1/6 and gets unlimited revisionist privileges.   I don't get to even bring it up.  I claim FOUL!!!
