The Dreamers Are Screwed

New York Times:

Before agreeing to provide legal status for 800,000 young immigrants brought here illegally as children, Mr. Trump will insist on the construction of a wall across the southern border, the hiring of 10,000 immigration agents, tougher laws for those seeking asylum and denial of federal grants to “sanctuary cities,” officials said.

The White House is also demanding the use of the E-Verify program by companies to keep illegal immigrants from getting jobs, an end to people bringing their extended family into the United States, and a hardening of the border against thousands of children fleeing violence in Central America. Such a move would shut down loopholes that encourage parents from Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras to send their children illegally into the United States, where many of them melt into American communities and become undocumented immigrants.

There’s not going to be a deal.

  1. If Trump is willing to give up the wall funding I think he could get the deal, the rest of those demands seem like middle of the road immigration policy?

  2. Two thoughts: First, the GOP needs to work with democrats to pass a version which does NOT address It might include a clause which bans dreamers the right to vote, or requires annual renewal. But have both houses of Congress PASS the Dream Act – and let Trump veto it – because then Trump OWNS the result.

Second, we need to set up an “underground railroad” now – so dreamers can hide in the US after Trump begins the purge We need to provide alternate identities for 800,000 and new residences and jobs. This needs to be an “in-your-face” defiance and we need to pre-condition potential jurors to NOT bring back a guilty verdict for Americans who shelter dreamers. That means they have to lie their ass off about being impartial in order to be seated on a jury. It takes one person on the jury to bring back a ‘not-guilty’ to put the process back at square one.

  3. If only those laws were in place before his father’s family came to America. If only . . .

  4. Maha, I agree strongly on that. People love to talk about “sanctuary cities” as if there’s something horrible about them, but the fact of the matter is, there are two choices:

    1) be a city where a crime victim who is undocumented *can’t* report it, a witness who is undocumented *can’t* provide testimony, where no one with ties to an undocumented person can risk any assistance given to the police, and, heck, where a victim of violence may not even be able to go to the hospital, for fear of having a reportable injury (like gunshot or knife wounds), without fear of deportation; or

    2) you can be one of those evil “sanctuary cities”, allowing stronger, safer community police work because you’re not scaring off crime victims and witnesses from every encounter with local officials.

Now, I know that rightwingers *want* undocumented immigrants to be little better than slaves. That’s pretty much the goal – be “tough on immigration” so people can hire undocumented folks and treat them like dirt. But the point of abolition was not to find a sneaky way to create slavery of desperation!

  5. Of course they’re screwed..They were screwed on January 20th. But that should be no surprise considering the psychological makeup of the big bag of shit who inhabits the White House. If he can use vulnerable people as pawns to achieve his ends..that’s what he’s going to do. To him it’s not like they’e human with hopes and dreams. They are just objects to be used to satisfy his need to be perceived as the grand negotiator. Basically hostages in his egotistical drama.
In the realm of spiritual qualities narcissism and empathy cannot coexist.. So, knowing Trump, it’s obvious they’re screwed. It’s all about Trump! Dreamers be damned!

  6. Schumer and Pelosi were being naive at best and at worst, foolish to think they could trust Trump on DACA. Given support among his hard core base is falling, he’s going to have to do more than flog the NFL to keep them. He may not be able to give them the wall, but its within his power to screw the Dreamers.

  7. When something disagreeable if not downright detestable was impending in my old Army days, someone would inevitably shout BOHICA.  It would serve to alert one to steal oneself to the upcoming misery.  The dreamers deserve such a shout.  Just the use of the acronym  elicits distressful Pavlovian responses in me.  It signals feelings of powerlessness and dread.  The dreamers suffer consequences of sins supposedly committed by their parents. Certainly a sign of the malignant stage of unbridled elitism.  A negative inheritance.  This cancer will effect us all eventually, so to them now and us later, BOHICA or in its short form, just bend over or grease up.

    I sure miss the c u n d gulag.

  8. I think the dreamers need to lawyer up. Get them in front of a jury to tell their stories. They need only get one juror to listen….They, themselves, did nothing wrong to get here.

  9. Thanx Swami. I do remember reading that comment by Gulag. Guess I just haven’t been paying attention. My excuse is that I’m 78 yo.
