Prosecutor in Trump criminal probe convenes grand jury to hear evidence, weigh potential charges

Manhattan’s district attorney has convened the grand jury that is expected to decide whether to indict former president Donald Trump, other executives at his company or the business itself should prosecutors present the panel with criminal charges, according to two people familiar with the development.

I don’t know anything not in the linked story, so just go there.

  1. You know, I've always wanted to be a juror in an important case.

Of course, no even barely competent  defense attorney would allow me to sit on a jury that might decide tRUMP's fate.

Hell's Bells!  I'd recommend tRUMP get the death penalty for a parking ticket!

And remember, I'm AGAINST the death penalty!!!

Except in the case of the tRUMP's.

OK, and a handful of others…  But they'd deserve it!!!!! 😉

  2. I'm wondering about how the timing will work out.  This should be the last step before charges are brought. Trump's usual strategy is delay, delay, delay. Suppose that puts it out a year, May 2022 in the height of the primary season. Before the November election, Trump is convicted (assuming the evidence is there.)  Trump will appeal to the USSC but the judge can lock up any convicted person pending appeal. Who else might be charged from the Trump crime family?

Yes, nothing will dent the love of true believers. There's a lot of Independent voters who may be turned off by the (I'm speculating) threats and actual violence during the trial.

Rudy's trial will be delayed as a judge decides what (if any) evidence is covered by privilege. (Remember that happened with Cohen and almost everything was allowed.) Rudy's show will lag Trump proceedings by at least six months UNLESS if/when the judge allows a ream of damning evidence, Rudy flips on Trump.

I don't rule out Trump throwing his kids under the bus and their response of flipping on Daddy.

The only thing I'm certain of is the unexpected event taking center stage. Nobody knows how this will evolve but none of it will be good for Trump.

  3. It reminds me of that old Chinese proverb…. "The long journey of attaining multiple criminal indictments begins with the single step of convening a Grand Jury". – Confucius

Oh, and don't forget what's coming down the pike for Matt Gaetz. I'm thinking about starting a petition and a go fund me page to have that sexual predator chemically castrated. It's a sad state of affairs when a Congressional representative boasts about his numerous sexual peccadillos as being something of a beneficent gesture while in reality he's preying on emotionally vulnerable and economically disadvantaged children. When he gets done serving his 10 year minimum he can look forward to attending the Sheriff's mandatory annual Halloween party for registered sex offenders. Costumes are optional? If Matt does decide to dress up for the Halloween party he can always just wear his gas mask and go as a disgraced Congressmen.

Well, Matt, it was fun while it lasted, huh? Instead of making Venmo payments through his Sugar Daddies account he'll be making Venmo payments into Chico's commissary account.

  4. Smart money says Weisselberg already rolled over. He's not about ready to be looking at the undercarriage of the bus. Who wants to spend their golden years sitting in a 5×8 cell while Trump is enjoying the good life on the golf course?

  5. After all these years of thinking the end was just around the corner, I'll believe it when I see it. Not holding my breath.

    • I'm not holding my breath, either, but at least it's an indication that there will be further developments.

  6. Be careful what you wish for.

Right now, the GOP is deeply divided between Old Guard & Trumpists.  Old Guard has the Money and the smart managers; Trumpists have the votes.  The only thing that could unify the GOP now would be the ability to blame Trump's downfall on the Democratic Party.

And the way it's playing out, that won't be hard at all.

NYC DA Cyrus Vance Jr. is the ideal "bad guy" in the story the GOP Propaganda Masters will build for the rabble:

    – His father was Jimmy Carter's (relatively dovish?) Secretary of State

    – Educated at Groton School & Yale (truly "elite" schools)

    – His offices argued for leniency for Jeffery Epstein in 2011

    – …and chose not to prosecute other high-profile sex-offense cases (Weinstein, Krauss), and there are allegations of related pay-offs (campaign donations)

    – after Wall Street crashed the World Economy in 2008, Vance brought charges against ONE bank – Abacus, a small Asian-owned private bank in NY's Chinatown – and they were acquitted on all charges.

FOX "newsertainment" will play this as Trump being persecuted by Vance.  It won't take much to paint Vance as an Elite Democrat Bureaucrat; it's actually true.  Far worse, it will revive the crazy Q-Anon Comet Pizza thing.

IMO, this is the only way the Old GOP can regain control of "their" Party, and the Democrats are once again making it easy.

    • Good prediction, as the Donald is a one trick pony and terrorist tactics are his plan A.   He has already pidgin-holed the grand jury as more of the same old witch hunt.  Yet he still keeps wearing the same pointed hat and rides on the same brooms. Introspection and self awareness have never been his strong points. This will be quite the test for our judicial system.  Lady Justice will need to guard against an inevitable orange thumb on her scales.  Dial O for obstruction is the probable illegal defense plan.

    • I can appreciate how the Right will spin this, which should deter anybody from doing the right thing. I also appreciate that Cy Vance's record isn't all that inspiring. However, Vance is retiring at the end of the year, so if there are indictments it probably won't be Vance taking them into court.

      1
      • Please, will the Democrats who don't like Vance submit a list of prosecutors who will be acceptable to Trump and Trumpsters as perfectly impartial.

        I'll wait.

The jury shouldn't be allowed to see Fox try to prosecute the prosecutor. I'm not sure how far the judge may go to insulate the jury but they will be instructed to decide if Trump did or did not violate the law.

The media (I don't include Fox.) needs to cover the trial and ignore the circus outside the trial and evidence. Fox will entirely cover the circus and ignore the documents, testimony and evidence. THAT exhibition of smoke and mirrors should be called for the farce it will be. But cover the trial except to point fingers at 'news' sources who are NOT.

        • Of course I'd love to see Trump get convicted & then rot in jail for the rest of his miserable life.  IMO, conviction is likely, but he'll stave off jail with appeals, so I don't expect much satisfaction.

But the "jury" that matters is Voters [who are allowed to vote], and their votes will be determined more by how it all looks from a distance, not what actually happens in Court.

The (Old) GOP would be glad to see Trump locked up (though they can't say that out loud), as long as they can blame that on Democrats.  THAT IS THE BEST CASE OUTCOME FOR THEM, and the worst case outcome for the rest of us, for America, and for Life On Earth.
